Ten Years of Music Banter
As far as I've been able to piece together, this month marks the ten year anniversary of MB. When this site's long absent founder made his first post all those years ago, who could have imagined all the laughter, tears and arguments about Slipknot that these forums would see in the decade that followed? Who could have imagined that people would one day hold Justin Timberlake in such high regard or that no one would give a shit when Guns 'n Roses finally released that long anticipated album?
I wasn't sure of the best way to celebrate this anniversary, but I figured we could at least use a thread to mark the milestone. Anyone have any stories from the site's early years? Favorite stories from other points in MB's history? And who is our oldest active member these days? I guessing it's either Vanilla or anticipation, but I'd be interested in finding out for sure. |
Who was the founder. Mars?

I have been on here for 8 years. Urban is one of the oldest members here too! Cheese you joined the same time as me.
I was absent for 2008 because I had so much going on with my degree and partying (dressing up like Gaga and being mistaken for her by intoxicated people, lol). I then realised during 2009 that I had forgotten about MB and swiftly returned and met some amazing new members. I can't wait for my 10 year anniversary. I've been on forums since I was 14, I was a well known member of CKY forums and AAF forums. On the AAF forums, there was a big group of us that used to make fun of the band and we had one of the band members have a go at us about it. I miss those people but the website cancelled the forum and I decided to join MB. When I first started here, I ticked off a member called Bungalow and we argued for years until he finally got banned. It was mainly because of my religious views, but I had Urban and Spike as close friends from day one. I was a bit immature when I started but when I came back in 2009 I had many life experiences and really enjoyed the extensive group of people. The other longest member, right track joined the month before (I think) me and he was the best damn mod this forum has ever had. Even though there were many other great mods, it was known by everyone that he was the boss and his actions were final, even if not everyone agreed. |
I've been going on forums for a long time too. The first one was an NHL hockey forum, back in 2001. I was 11 and had plenty of unsupervised Internet time, haha.

Let's continue to discuss MB's history and not rustle jimmy's (trademarked by Rezz 2013).

can you Miss Vanilla enlighten me, if you can as to what became of Merkaba

Merkaba pops in occasionally (when I make him haha). I text him quite regularly but he's too busy with a 6 day job (plus a girlfriend) to fit in MB. |

TheBig3 is 2004 as well, no?

big3 and lacesoutdan know just as much about the old days as i do, and i've learned that looking forward is much more rewarding than looking back. shout out to my younger days and the internet weirdos that i shared cool music with.

I think my favorite part of MB over the years are the short stints of super crazy over the top people that have left a lasting dent in my memory.
Shout out to the Wendy Cals, Coreyallens, bandteacher1s, Crazyvegns and all those type of folks. I know there are others that I am not remembering but oh well. Don't want to encourage them too much as it is. I first came to MB with the intention of recruiting some members to fill in the voids of my dj roster. I was going to resurrect my station and give it another go but I only ended up recruiting Mouseketeer I think her name was. It just didn't work out like I planned but I ended up befriending tons of people over the years especially holdyoualways. I also always looked up to murder junkie when he was around. |
18 December 2003 was when Rockafella Skank registered so I'm guessing that was when the site was created. I wonder where all the original members are now? I can remember Thrice popping in briefly during the summer.

I miss the bandteacher memes I think they got deleted. "ALL MY KIDS KNOW HOW TO BLOW" |
All of which makes me feel like a

Congrats to those who have been here for the longest time and Happy Tenth Anniversary Music Banter! Yes I know I forgot it: I was down the pub, er, getting you a great present I mean (hic) --- look just don't start, not today ok? Not on our anniversary.. right that it! I'm off out! SLAM!! |

I wrote something up, but it sounded like an old man reliving the glory days, so lets just say that the old days - especially the founding members - had little to no real musical depth (Look at those RS posts). OR you'd have someone like Murder Junkie/fenixPunk who seemed to have a very specific but intimate (limited) knowledge of music.
I had come from another music forum that was massive, and I love it because it was the only place I could ask questions about music and have people know what I was talking about (i.e. "Do you think Paz's involvement in Zwan means she's no longer in APC?") That was an actual question I asked that, and it was weird to me to not have someone go "WTF did you just say?" That site up and vanished one day and I came here. The site in the early days was a lot more hostile than it is now. I was routinely told I spoke English worse than people speaking it as their 3rd language. I was also told I only liked 3 bands (or something like that). But I loved the fight, so I stuck around. The community seemed to really like the place then as something that they made and were a part of. You always had people wanting to improve the place. This wasn't always good. For example, we once rationalized a solution to spammers in the form of an arcade. It was fine, but when I look back on it I just wonder "Who the hell thought that was a plan?" Probably me, honestly. I'm sure I thought "This seems genius" There also was a stronger sense of "I don't care if this offends you" type people back then that really made the place great. Adidasss would often tell people to go **** themselves. Urban had once lines I still think about to this day as just being a 3-lined rebuke better than any wall of text. Right-Track, who I always loved, would often entertain my complete insanity. And Ethan (or many usernames) went from 40-times banned to the most prolific poster we had. I always, always tried hitting on jibber. She never agreed to go out with me. I think before I die, the one thing I really want from this site is to meet up with someone from here. Just to get their real opinions on the place. |
Yip I experienced it the same. Back then if you say something moronic you would get flamed by other members (especially in the religion forum). Murder Junky is so awesome, he always like my avatars and I like his.

I think this place has changed even in the few years I've been here. It seems to flop back and forth between most people feeling everyone should say what they mean vs. everyone being nice to each other. Of course the best is always a happy median between the two. A decade is a long time. What is the average lifespan of a forum like this, anyway?

A Finnish music site which I use to contribute is now 11 and half years old with 140 000 registered members.
|
That's a lotta members.
