That actually did happen right near where I live. We even have a bridge tunnel called the Monitor-Merrimac.

You have to go to the western part of the state to get to any real nature. And then you have all the depressing, run down, redneck towns in the mountains. And past them is hillbilly territory.

So these are what your neighbours past the mountains look like?

It's like something out of a ****ing horror movie. One of these days I need to visit the USA and actually seek these people out for a real life experience.

Never been there so I wouldn't know. I don't think most people in the South have actually ever seen a hillbilly. They're sort of like a myth. All we have are rumors, conjecture, and Deliverance.

Are you serious in that you've never actually seen a hillbilly? Are there any official figures on how many there actually are and for which state has the highest population of them?

Well we don't really have any hillbillies around the eastern part of the state that I know of. From the North Carolina border to Washington DC it's a pretty settled and metropolitan area. It's a four hour drive to the other part of the start and with nothing there past Richmond in the middle but ****burg redneck towns there isn't any reason for us to go over there.

And I have no idea how many hillbillies there actually are or if they're like the movies. But at least around here West Virginia is generally accepted to be hillbilly central where all the cousin ****ing happens. Though whether that's actually true I don't really know.

I came in in the middle of the conversation I don't know if he answered your question. Generally the poor Scotch-Irish that lived in Appalachia are called Hillbillies. I would like to draw you a map of the states with arrows and percentages to thoroughly answer your question but I thought it would be easier (for me) if you peruse through the wiki articles for you to get a better understanding of Hillbillies etc.

Quote:
An estimated 90%[36] of Appalachia's earliest European settlers originated from the Anglo-Scottish border country— namely the English counties of Cumberland, Westmoreland, Northumberland, Durham, Lancashire, and Yorkshire, and the Lowland Scottish counties of Ayrshire, Dumfriesshire, Roxburghshire, Berwickshire, and Wigtownshire. Most of these were from families who had been resettled in the Ulster Plantation in northern Ireland in the 17th century,[37] but some came directly from the Anglo-Scottish border region.[38] In America, these people are often grouped under the single name "Scotch-Irish" or "Scots-Irish". While various 20th-century writers tried to associate Appalachia with Scottish highlanders, Highland Scots were a relatively insignificant percentage of the region's early European immigrants.[38]

Firstly I never knew that Appalachia covered so much territory, but am familiar with its isolation and unique history, a pity you can't draw a map of percentages etc as it would be an interesting look.
