there are some people I consider to be very close to me who nearly incessantly talk shit about me (not naming any names but I've learned that [future] in-laws can definitely be like that) and it does hurt my feelings but I kindly distance myself from those people until it doesn't hurt as much. A lot of the time I say I don't care, or I just try harder to be more agreeable to their standards (without bending my personality to appeal to them) but it's so frustrating to treat people with unconditional kindness, and then have them stab you in the back.
