The last time I was in Britain, you had to have a friggin' license to own a goddamn television.

I try to tell people that about both Britain and Canada but they love to fetishize those two countries and put the pussy on the pedestal with them.

Whoa whoa whoa. Canada is wonderful. Just cold is all.

The only Canadian city I really know well is Vancouver and I love it. Weather is nearly identical to here, rain and cold in winter but not *bitter* cold like Winnipeg or Edmonton, some of the best restaurants in the word, the incredible Stanley Park, vibrant night life, great town.

Too bad the Canucks suck this year :(

Still do. On one hand it's ridiculous that you need a license to own a TV. But on the other hand it's thanks to the license fee that the BBC makes some reasonably intelligent and interesting TV programs, you know TV that actually engages the mind, otherwise they'd just screen wall-to-wall soap operas, reality shows and bloody singing competitions like every other TV station.

You've said it, it's one of the few channels here that prides itself on not giving us crappy soaps and reality shows week after week.

I agree the grass isn't always greener though tbh. Even here, people slate their own cities and fetishise London. I wouldn't live there unless you paid me some serious money.

What does the typical Brit pay for Cable? And how much is the TV licence?


Personally I refuse to pay for TV and use an antenna. I accept that it limits my choices but I'm ok with it, I don't watch a lot. If there's something that's on cable only and I really need to see it (this will definitely be true if the Ducks make it to the BCS title game) I'll head over to Becky's place or go to a sports bar or something.
