This is what I keep under the bed specifically in case of intruders:
I have a knife nearby too but I like the extra reach that a heavy blunt object affords. Plus, mentally, I'd be less hesitant about bludgeoning than slashing or shooting.

Switchblades (locking knives) are illegal here and carry a hefty penalty if caught with one, but folding knives and short knives in a sheath are fine to carry. I have a Swiss Army knife. My dad has a more impressive collection of knives - he's got some swords, a few Spydercos, 2 katanas, 6 bayonets, and a whole bunch of other random knives.
