Positivity Thread

I was initially inspired to make this thread because ladyislingering and I were talking about how we watch cartoons to de-stress, and at the same time, I was sending my best friend my favorite website that helps me calm anxiety and put positive thoughts into my head.

I want this thread to have YOUR ways of de-stressing.
Lists are fine, but I mostly want obtainable ideas, such as websites and pictures and gifs that just generally are happy, positive, and lift your spirits.

I think that it would be amazing if people who were feeling down or negative on the site could come here and look at things that will make them feel better!

Here's something that ALWAYS helps me:

Cute Roulette: Cutest videos on the web

It's a website with countless videos of cute animals doing cute things!
What are some of your favorite positive, funny, or cute videos? Embed them here!

Share now! :]

Here are some ideas that members have mentioned!
  • Mediation
  • Running
  • Listening to your favorite music
  • Talking to loved ones

I'm sure most people have seen this before, but man it's impossible for me to be in bad mood after I watch this a few times.

There's a few things I will do to de-stress from the real world:

-I follow a few people on Youtube who post videos of gameplay/commentaries, and I enjoy watching them. It's also a great way to spend my days off when I am by myself.

-(obvious answer) Listen to music. I honestly can't think of a lot of other things that would satisfy my need to relax. Especially when I get into the depths of amazing post-rock.

-Talk to my cat. No i'm not crazy.

-Talk to myself. Seriously, i'm not crazy. Sometimes it's nice to have a conversation with yourself about something good that happened. It's always nice to be reminded of something that was awesome in the only way that you can remember it, by talking to yourself.

It may seem ridiculous to you, but a lot of people talk to themselves and I do as well!

The thing that cheers me up is chocolate, x-files, the movie Legally Blonde, and talking to my mom! But that's probably not helpful for everyone but I'm sure these lovely people will offer suggestions.

Talking to yourself is simply part of the human thought process and is completely normal.

Arguing with yourself....not so much

I have definitely argued with myself, maybe I'm the crazy one!

Depends on whether your debating two possible courses of action or telling yourself to STFU, no *you* STFU, no YOU! et cetera...

It was more like me telling myself off for thinking stupid thoughts. So what's your final decision, am I?

I would say, no. Having an argument with yourself to get yourself to stay out of a stupid situation is actually a good way to keep you from doing something stupid.

Well now I'm relieved, you're absolutely right! I better not derail the thread, so other things that relax me is shopping, weed, and websites like notalwaysright.com.

I guess I have various ways to de-stress, to force myself to change my outlook, or just generally make myself feel better.

As a smoker, theres always the obvious, short-term "fix" that actually does help but only in certain high-pressure, stressful environments. For example, I have a background in call centres and I can't tell you the amount of times over the years I have thrown down a headset in a fit of rage and stormed outside for a smoke and to slow down. It doesn't fix anything in the long run but it enables you to keep going.

The other unhealthy one would be drinking, but theres nothing like going out with mates and getting smashed to seperate yourself from reality for a brief period after an eventful, stressful week. Or even day.

I also use music, but what I listen depends on how I'm feeling because I tend to either use something soft, relaxing, uplifting and beautiful and other times I might some death or black metal on, the most angry, disgusting album I can think of.

Daft comedy films and/or sitcoms often do the trick though. Theres definitely something to be said for anything or anyone that can make you laugh, even when you are down and miserable.

Trollheart 06-04-2013 05:24 AM

I defy anyone to be sad after seeing this:

djchameleon 06-04-2013 08:05 AM

I tend to head on over to youtube for the feel goods.

I can go into any DailyGrace video and have her crack me up.
A little douchebaggery from Kassem G does the trick as well.
Swoozie is a cool dude that cheers me up also.

When it comes to movies, I go straight for Weekend at Bernies 1 and 2. I prefer the second one though because it reminds me of where my parents are from.

Sequoioideae 06-07-2013 08:07 PM

If I want to feel good about something, I listen to music, and vent my negativity with mental scenarios. When I want to think about a positive future, I can only think of making amazing music like some of my favorite musicians. I think about how amazing an idea with in music can be, and I've been latched onto the idea of nature within music. I long to make something with that theme, I feel like I would achieve a massive sense of fulfillment, I would be happy making something with my own hands and the sounds around me.

I also like to read about John Cage, he had really sincere views on sound and music. He has to be the happiest person besides the Dali Lama that I can think of, and I wish I had his views on the world. He had a sense of fulfillment with the things around him, yet he was able to blur the line between sound and music. Listening to him in interviews also make me really happy, almost teary-eyed, and it gives me hope.

That's great, I came home one day in the pouring rain and I had nothing to protect me from it. So, I let myself get wet and danced around in it and my flatmates laughed at my willingness to get wet. It can be really fun. I kissed in the rain once too, that was romantic.

Janszoon 06-07-2013 10:41 PM

I ran through the pouring rain tonight. Not because I really wanted to but because I was transporting two laptops and an iPad to my car from my office and didn't want to get them wet. Does that count? :p:

Arya Stark 06-07-2013 10:59 PM

Did it make you feel positive? Ahaha

I just have really bad anxiety, and I was told once that anxiety attacks often occur when there is too much excess energy in the body (along with other things). But when I run, I don't have time to be anxious, I get everything out and I feel better after.

Running does feel amazing. Especially when you get in that zone where you're not thinking at all, just doing. It's like the best form of meditation.

Arya Stark 06-07-2013 11:19 PM

Meditating is good too! Has anyone here tried it?
I had an app for a little bit and it would have a positive quotation, and what I would do is keep that quotation in mind for the allotted time, it would help so much!

Yes, I used to meditate a lot actually. I still do when I'm having problems with my mind running.

Arya Stark 06-07-2013 11:23 PM

It's such a calming thing to do. I remember, after I had been having some anxiety issues, I listened to this mediation tape that someone had lent to me.
It made me fall asleep but when I woke up I only had calming thoughts.

Everyone thinks kissing in the rain is so cheesy but I love it. It makes me so happy. I had my first kiss in the pouring rain too

I didn't see this post before.
I have done the same thing. I remember my friend and I had to park so far from my room once when I was still at school. It was POURING and we ran back in the rain with no umbrella! It was so funny and great.

It's this kind of natural, wonderful feeling. I am a total water baby and my star sign is a water sign. But I definitely think rain can make you feel really good.

One of my favourite things to do is leave anonymous asks on tumblr to people saying really nice things, not just oh "you're pretty" or **** like that, I read through their blog and try to find something to genuinely compliment, and then I'll go back to see if they answered it. I love seeing their reactions because they always react like someone gave them a large sum of money or something and that just makes me so happy.

Arya Stark 06-10-2013 05:08 PM

I LOVE DOING THAT!
We talked about this once but yeah I have a schoolmate who is really depressed and sometimes I go on her page and give her a heartfelt compliment anonymously. Just s oshe knows someone is listening.

I think the best part is it being anonymous, especially

My Dad is coming to visit on Fathers Day. We'll be having lunch at my daughters place of employment (a nice little specialty restaurant/bistro type) where we'll be getting the VIP treatment and all. The best part of it is that this will be the very first Fathers Day that Hanna, my Dad, and me will be spending it together. It's been 19 years in the making.
