Now I'm sharing the knowledge with another girl so she doesn't have to make the discovery herself.

You are a scholar and a saint. I bet it was a rather disturbing discovery. Godspeed.

Honestly, I could really use a girlfriend. At 21, never having had a serious relationship of any kind, I'm beyond ready. Unfortunately, I don't really have any "prospects" at the moment (except for one very, very slight potential, but I have serious doubts about that or if it would even work anyway)... I really don't have anything to contribute, it's just a bit frustrating.

Plus, my lifestyle isn't exactly normal for a 21 year old middle class American male. I live in Nicaragua for heaven's sake. And my favorite activities include eating at ethnic restaurants (or food trucks... or sketchy groceries), drinking copious amounts of exotic coffee, jamming for hours on end, reading by myself, and shopping at record stores and thrift stores. I go to the movies once or twice a year at the most, I don't drink, and I tend to not like huge parties. I feel like I need to move to somewhere with more hipsters like Portland or Seattle or something, I tend to get along better with the "freaks" than anyone else in my hometown. Maybe then I would finally find a girl who is weird enough to like me and share a few of my interests (who doesn't turn out to be horrible).

You seem like a totally cool guy man. I think your overthinking it a little too much. If your attracted to a girl make a move. Telling yourself it probably won't work before you even make an effort is never gonna get you anywhere. Granted i've never been to Costa Rica, but i'm sure there is a lil senorita there just waiting on somebody from Kentucky to make a move. I had that problem when I was younger, I didn't wanna break out of a comfort zone. Nothing will ever happen for you til you really want it to.

It scarred me for life.

And LOL @ "boytoy". That's what I say about women who are in their 40's/50's who have boyfriends/husbands in their 20's. She's a cougar, he's her boytoy.

Trust me hun, there will be a girl you will run into that loves you for you and she might even have similar interests. Have you thought about joining some kind of club or being friendly to ladies when you're getting your coffee?

By the way, I'm a weird chick, there's plenty of us out there, guys included. I think I struggle with relationships because I really like my own space - I like to sleep alone and I spend hours on the internet or playing computer games. Between work, study and sleep there isn't a lot of space for me to fit in a guy unless he really likes the same things and will be happy just hanging out at home or can take me out to the movies or for lunch etc. I like to keep things simple. But I also like spontaneity, for example, going camping or ice skating.

Yeah, that's true. But, and this is a big but, Nicaragua ain't Costa Rica. If I was in Costa Rica I probably wouldn't think twice, because their culture is practically identical to American culture, with just enough Latino flavor to make me feel comfortable (my adopted dad grew up in Mexico, so our family has more of a Latin American culture than the average white family from Kentucky). But Nicaragua is another beast entirely. The culture here is... different. Very, very different. There are many, many wonderful women here who I have become friends with, but I don't think that I could be with a Nica, simply because of the culture difference. Plus, Nicaraguan girls tend to come on to any white guy they see, because we usually have more money than they do. That sounds harsh and too broad and imperialist of me to say, and I really don't like saying it, but it appears to be true, for the most part. I HAVE seen it work, but it has been very, very, very rare situations. However, if I do end up going south to Costa Rica... then I'll keep my eyes open.

Joining a club, maybe, when I get back to the States. Not really anything like that for me here in Nicaragua. As far as flirting with random girls in coffee places, I am beyond uncomfortable flirting with strangers. Plus, I've never decided I "liked" someone just by seeing them. I'm not against it... but it's definitely way out of my comfort zone. And again, that would be something to do in the States, not here. They honestly only have a handful of coffee shops here, and I live in Managua, the capital. It's kind of like the 20th century here, they don't have too many of the things we take for granted in the majority of the western world. All that aside, I appreciate the suggestions.
