yeah but that doesn't mean that's where the story took place. I don't see San Franciso as being that rough of a place.

Okay, I'm going with New York, upper east side then? Where all those big brownstones are, you know, near Central Park.

San Francisco is nicer on the whole, but it does have its rougher patches.

It was in the Candlestick Park/Bayview district of SF which, along with certain parts of the Ingleside, Mission, Tenderloin, Dogpatch, and a little strip south of the Financial District are known to have some crime/gang problems. The Mission used to be the worst back in the 90s-early 00s, you couldn't (and still shouldn't) wear Red or Blue clothes in public without at least getting eyeballed and threatened. One guy got shot in the head while filling up his truck for wearing blue JEANS and a white shirt back in '05 I think.

In general SF is a very safe, friendly city but with the growing problem of gentrification courtesy of seemingly every transplant yuppie ever and the booming tech industry it's become RIDICULOUSLY expensive to live in safe/desirable parts of the city. The only safe, affordable areas are the Sunset and Richmond districts where a bedroom with roommates is 600-900$ and if you don't have a car you can expect upwards of an hour and a half commute to get to anywhere worth being. Elsewhere it gets up to 1.5k and for a single bedroom studio it's about 2-3k. If you're a student or young adult it's pretty rough but if you're financially stable and have a good job it's not so bad.

Looking back I think I was just EXTREMELY unlucky because nobody I know has had that much happen to them in their lifetime of living in the greater SF Bay Area- this includes people who've grown up in the slums of Oakland and Berkley. With recent budget cuts on the police department in Oakland they're about 50% understaffed and the remaining 50% aren't exactly all "good cops"- definitely NOT a place you want to live. Berkley is finally getting a bit better from what I've been told.

keep thinking that. People die on the outside everyday thinking those same exact thoughts.
