After barely dragging myself out of bed this morning and feeling too exhausted to get myself out the door, I read the news about Margaret Thatcher and felt like I could take on the world with my gladness.

Were you even alive when she had any kind of bearing on the world?

I'm only 23, but I'm almost always affected by the suffering of others (and I have a close friend who's twice my age and incredibly informative over the matter, having experienced the reign and aftermath of Thatcher for himself). I hope that's relevant.

Put yourself in her position. Half the country hates you, the national papers either love you or hate you depending on what day, there's rebellion in Ireland and the country is in bankruptcy. Now I'm not necessarily a supporter of Thatcher, but how many of you will be able to stand up against the whole country and take the reigns? Not many. Yes, she closed down the mines and caused terrible unemployment, but if she hadn't have done that then we would have slid into hyperinflation like Germany at the end of the first world war.

****ING REBELLION???? WE'RE A FREE STATE YOU ****
Sorry but we hurt about these things. You don't rebel against someone who has no control over you.
I'll go and have a nice lie down now...

Edit: jsut read the rest of your post. So it was also ok for Hitler to do what he did, otherwise Germany would have just died as a world power? Jesus man: the way you justify things is almost comical!

Where the **** are you from? It wasn't a rebellion. It was sectarian violence caused by 40% of the people being treated like **** for hundreds of years because of their religion. 1916 was a rebellion. My great grandfather was very luck to survive the War of Independence and Civil War.

I'm referring to first hand experience rather than seeing things on the tv and in the papers, that was the point I was making.

You need to qualify this better, I guess you mean Nth Ireland and the violence there was nothing new in Thatcher's time.

Yeah I understand that. Obviously from a historical point of view it would have been better had I lived in Belfast (though I'm glad I didn't!) but even so, as I said we were only a short distance from the whole thing, and it did play out almost every day on the news. I take your point but I don't accept that it "doesn't count": it certainly counted for a huge part of my life, even if only experienced second-hand.

As a matter of interest, did you have any personal investment in any of the bombings, as in, did you know anyone who got hurt/seen any/visited sites etc?

I was actually referring to living in the UK under Thatcher first hand. But since you're asking about the bombings, it was always a source of worry every year especially around the Christmas period, as this was when most bombings took place and they were usually in the main cities. It was usually known as the IRA's Christmas Campaign. I remember seeing the aftermath of a pub bombing in the Charing Cross road area back in the 80s. These bombings were a constant event every year but as you know they just gradually died out.

As you would expect the UK press were always extremely anti-IRA and for years they failed to see that the UVF were just as bad.
