She and her female friends decided to order a bunch of sangria, so between the loud profanity in front of a child, and drinking alcohol when pregnant I couldn't find out if I felt bad, or angry.

My mom works in a hospital in a bad part of the city, and she get's all kinds of junkies giving birth. It sucks because 1. You have a newborn coming down off whatever the mother's choice of substance is 2. The poor kid won't have much of a future 3. A lot of the people that come in like that aren't exactly "friendly".

The docs apparently tell you not to quit smoking when you find out you're pregnant as the body is going through enough dramatic changes without withdrawals.

Not to say I don't think they're wrong tho.

It's not so bad. My mom smoked when she was pregnant with me and I turned out totally fucking perfect.

I mean, my mom smoked with all three of her children. She quit periodically, but everytime she got pregnant, she'd been back smoking. All of us are of above average in IQ, got good grades, and, aside from me, avoided droogs.

But I was the oldest child. That was almost to be expected.

And the tobacco contributing to low birth weight or whatever - all three of my sisters and myself were of average size.

My mom did NOT drink when pregnant with any of us, so I have no say as to what effect that has, but tobacco had no real effect on us.

For the record, I'm 25 and feel I will never have children. When my mother was 25, she had a six year old and a four and a half year old. But I turned out all right. My sister who's 23 turned out all right. My youngest sister, a freshman in high school, is a varsity cheerleader at the top of her class with her grades, and turned out well.

You can't say your mother smoking had no effect on you. You don't know how you could have turned out otherwise. And anecdotal evidence is generally quite poor, f.ex statistically.
