Riddles Thread

I figured we needed one like this, post a riddle we can try and solve it and winner gets to pick the next one (unless they're too lazy to in which case anyone can :thumb:). Oh and if you Google the answer I hope you get hit by a bus the next time you cross the street :nono:

just kidding, but without further ado

First up:
A man gives 10 cents to one friend and 15 cents to another. What time is it?

Definitely. If you got that on your own, props.

Feel free to post another if you want.

Imagine you are in a room with no doors. The walls are made of smooth, solid rock with no places to establish a firm grip, no weak points to break through, and no windows. The floor is made of plexiglass, also with no breakable points, and below, about 200 feet down, you can see nothing but lava. The roof is made of regular, breakable glass, but it is 500 feet above you. You can see that on the other side of the glass is a room filled with water. However, it looks like the roof will hold unless you can somehow come in contact with it to break it yourself. Regular physics apply (ie. gravity exists and is holding you down). You are provided with nothing but a 30 foot long rope, and a pair of regular household scissors. How do you get out of the room safely?

Aight before I try and think of this, I'm confused by one part of it.

You say "You can see that on the other side of the glass is a room filled with water", is that referring to the roof? Is the room above you filled with water, and you can see it through the glass?

Yeah, the water is above you, on the other side of the glass roof. There is lava below you, on the other side of the plexiglass beneath your feet.

Trollheart 12-08-2012 01:18 PM

Is this a proper riddle, ie does it have a logical, workable solution, or is it like the man who eats the calendar to survive, ie eats the dates? In other words, is it a smartass funny solution like "use the scissors to cut yourself some slack" or something like that? Or has it a real, proper solution? And have we been given ALL of the pertinent information?

Bingo!

Haha no, there's a logical solution here. And yes, all the pertinent information has been given.

wiggums 12-08-2012 10:33 PM

Cute the rope in half. This makes two halves. Put the two halves together, that makes 1 hole.

Walk through the hole and you escape.

Thom Yorke 12-08-2012 10:46 PM

Lol looks like this has hit a roadblock so I'll give it to wiggums. Sort of on the right track. The answer I was looking for was to stop imagining yourself in the room. You're using your imagination to work yourself out of the room, so I guess that can kind of be considered an extension of that.

Sure. A man lives in a five story apartment building. Every morning he gets on the elevator, hits the button for the first floor, and heads off to work. Every evening he returns, pushes the button for the third floor, takes the elevator up, then walks the remaining two flights of stairs up to his apartment. Why does he do this?

In the morning is he getting on the elevator from the fifth floor?

Thom Yorke 12-08-2012 11:11 PM

^ Heard that one as well, so I'll refrain from answering. I'm pretty sure I didn't get the answer when I heard it though.

Yes.

Since both of you already know Janszoon's one, I'll give you guys one to work on while I try to figure out that one:

There is a room with a single light bulb inside. On the outside of the room, there are three switches. Each switch is labelled 'ON/OFF' so you can tell what state they're in. One of these switches is attached to the light bulb, but the other two are not.

You begin with the room sealed off and with you on the outside of the room. You are allowed to play with the switches however you want and put them in any configuration you want. You are also allowed to walk in to the room and look at the light bulb whenever you want to - BUT you can ONLY DO THIS ONCE. The goal, of course, is to figure out which switch is attached to/controlling the light bulb. So, what would you have to do to figure it out?

If there's no time limit you could turn one switch on and leave it on for a long time. Then turn it off. Then you could flip another one on and run into the room right away. If it's off but warm, it's the switch you turned on first. If it's on, it the one you flipped on last. If it's neither, it;s the other one.

The ****? Are you really telling me your not Googling these? This one took me a hell of a while to figure out, the one in the OP I never figured out and had to look up the answer.

Thom Yorke 12-08-2012 11:34 PM

I thought the 10 + 15 = quarter thing was pretty easy to key in on in the OP. I love doing this **** though. There are some you just get stuck on forever, and some that come really easy. Either way, when you come to the conclusion or have to look up the answer, you'll always wonder how it took you so long or how easy it was to miss.

Yeah I didn't mean to sound accusatory, just that some of these have stumped the smartest people I know and if you were Googling the answers you'd only be ruining the thread for the rest of us. If you're actually getting these that fast though then props.

Just so I don't waste my time coming up with any random theories, is the solution something that can be found in the question? Like it's not something random like 'elevator maintenance is done in the PM on floors 4 and 5' :D

Just want to make sure cause it's so easy to overthink these

Thom Yorke 12-08-2012 11:40 PM

^ There's no info he's hiding from you. It's definitely an "outside the box" answer though.

And no worries. Definitely don't want to ruin this thread. I'm surprised there wasn't one like it on here.

Yeah I hate these cause it's like, is the answer hidden in the question, or is it something I should infer from the question, like is the man trying to lose weight by getting exercise.

You're making me look stupid itt with how fast you're getting these.

No, he's doing what he does because he has to.

Thom Yorke 12-09-2012 12:00 AM

I heard a slightly alternate one for Janszoon's (same premise but just an added little tidbit) and it might give you a clue (or it might add another obstacle in getting the answer, I'm not really sure). Do you want to hear it or keep going on with guessing? It's Janszoon's riddle though too. Don't want to say it if it's not necessary.

I'll let Janszoon decide, he might want a couple more people to see the riddle so they get a chance or he might not care.

Janszoon 12-09-2012 12:05 AM

I'm totally neutral on this. Ball's back in your court Tuna. Whatever you want to do.
