Does anyone have tips on dealing with anxiety regarding family members' surgery? My dad goes under the knife Wednesday, and I've been incredibly stressed out for the past few days--sleeping poorly, eating less, and doing practically nothing.

What kind of surgery? Does he have any preexisting health problems?

Hip replacement. He's really young for it, but it's an old injury that he never got properly treated coming back to bite him. Bone on bone in the joint now.

He's in good shape otherwise, except for depression/anxiety.

This is probably horrible advice, but...

When I get depressed or anxious, I like to watch horror movies. Movies like Sleepaway Camp 2 & 3 are ridiculously bad and gory, but they just cheer me up for some reason. You probably don't like slasher flicks, but maybe there's something that you find comforting and familiar?

He's gonna be ok. You know he's gonna be monitored throughout the entire surgery?? They're gonna make sure he'll get the right amount of anaesthetic, the right amount of oxygen, etc. We've come a long, long way in the medical field. The chances of anything happening to him at all are slim to none. I promise. I absolutely promise you that he's gonna come out just fine.

My comfort couldn't be more different--a Simon and Garfunkel marathon.

Thanks, LiL. I've never had somebody close to me go through surgery before, so it's tough. I'm just trying to give him the love and support he needs right now.
