To be be fair, nihilism is basically realism so at least I find it kind of hard to describe actual, accurate descriptions of reality as trite.

Being a defeatist isn't really nihilism. Especially when it comes to maintaining the status quo. To me nihilism was never 'Why do anything when life is meaningless?' it's more 'Why do things I don't care about when life is meaningless?'

Defeatist is definitely a better word to describe it. At least nihilism at it's core implies at least a certain level of productivity in one's existence- just plain giving up is different.
