I know there's not really a properly defined line between "mainstream" and "not mainstream", but I think it's safe to say the Buckethead being included in the "not mainstream" category is quite funny.

I would say the "mainstream" side of the line involves things like being a household name and having top 40 hits, neither of which are true of Buckethead. So, if you ask me, that puts him on the "not mainstream" side of things.

Well, I'm not that sure to be honest. When it comes to "household names" the only artists from the 20th century my parents have heard of are the Beatles, the Stones and Bob Dylan. But that's just our little corner of Manchester.
However, it seems that when you get more genre specific, for instance anyone who knows about progressive metal or avant-garde metal, they will almost certainly have heard of Buckethead.
Either way though, I was definitely wrong to include it when it's clearly very ambiguous.
