Jobs in music?
 

Hey guys, I'm a nearly done my junior year in high school, and I'm pretty sure I want to do something music related when I grow up. I don't want to be in a band or create music, but rather something probably in the media of music.

Music journalism is what I had in mind. (like a writer for a music magazine or music website) So, I basically had a few questions for anyone who might know more than me.

1. What are some jobs in music you guys think would be fun and/or well paying?

2. If I want to take up music journalism, what should my major in college be?

3. Do you guys think getting a job in music would be exceptionally difficult or attainable? Should I go for it?

4. Any other thoughts?

There was a poster here for a little bit who used to work for music magazines in the UK back in the 90s, believe their user name was Push. Hope they spot this thread.

Fun and well paying a subjective though generally speaking, pay is not great. Do it because it brings you joy.

As for education some sort of Journalism / English major type deal would likely work.

Definitely try. Nothing worth having is easy to get, and in the worse case you're right back where you started except you'll have the experience and knowledge of having tried.

I don't think there's such thing as well paying journalism. If you want to be a journalist of any sort you're going to have to suck it up and do it because you love writing, not because you'll be paid well. And yes, you WILL need to love writing. Loving music isn't enough if you want to make a living writing about it.

Anyway, as Dave said, a journalism or English major should be just fine, with electives in various musical classes, maybe even a minor in something music related.

See, my second thought was to be going for an English teacher job. So if I majored in English, that would probably serve that end as well, right?

i worked for a while as an online music/movie reviewer

i only got paid with CDs and tickets

and half of the CDs i don't even want nor the movies I want to see

i gave up after a while

If you are thinking of high school, middle, or elementary teaching you need a specific degree for it, not just an English degree (though you may find exceptions, somewhere). If you are thinking of an English professor type deal, you'll probably need a masters degree.

^^he can probably teach adults English in a non-English speaking country

Oh, I didn't even think of that. Yeah, there's that too, and you probably wouldn't need a masters.

I have a friend who double majored in English and Psychology who teaches English in South Korea.

Teaching English as a Foreign Language is a totally different practice than literature is though.
