What is really more efficient when it comes to waking you up?

I've heard something from those random fact finders, that apples are more efficient than coffee/caffeine when it comes to waking you up in the morning. Is this true? Are apples really better for you when it comes to waking you up, or are you one of those that would rather stick with a cup of coffee to get you out of bed in the morning? Discuss.

midnight rain 04-22-2012 10:48 AM

Coffee has always done the trick for me. What do apples have that help you wake up? Just a good source of carbs or something?

CanwllCorfe 04-22-2012 10:52 AM

My vote goes to neither, since I use an alarm clock.

Fail joke is fail.

I'll use this thread to voice my opinion that energy drinks are a waste of money, bad for you, and only as popular as they are because teens think they're cool.

I think the gist of the claim is that the vitamins you'd get from fresh fruit will serve your body better than a cup of coffee, especially when you consider the effect over the course of the entire day rather than in the immediate waking moments.

Mind you, I'm also typing this as I stare down at my (now empty) 2nd cup of coffee for the morning

It's true. I use an alarm clock. I don't use anything to "wake me up" aside from that.

Well when I say I drink a cup of coffee to wake me up, I don't literally mean I drink it to get woken up :D

Just to get rid of that annoying groggy, molasses feeling. I get headaches when I don't drink coffee now :pimp:

Oh I know. When I said alarm I meant that I don't have anything else, whether that be coffee or an energy drink or anything like that. If I'm thirsty I'll have water or cranberry juice. I'm not too big on coffee either, so I imagine that's a big part of it. I do like chocolate covered coffee beans though.

PoorOldPo 04-22-2012 11:31 AM

wet my face, i like apples and coffe, not together though.

Exo 04-22-2012 12:52 PM

I do not recommend this for anybody because it's horrible and I hate it but...

Cold water in the shower is the best way to wake up. I'm not talking about a full cold shower though. What I do is take a normal shower and then 30 seconds before I get out I blast the knob to the right as far as it goes. It's the best wake up you can get.

But it's a nightmare.

Key 04-22-2012 01:01 PM

Showers do it for me, so neither.

WWWP 04-22-2012 01:45 PM

I am so disgustingly addicted to coffee. I've surpassed the "if I don't drink coffee I get a bad headache" phase of the addiction and am now to the point where if I don't have coffee within an hour of waking up I will be useless for the entire day. It's kind of terrifying.

I also have a bit of a schedule/routine to which I adhere, and no matter how much coffee I've had if I don't get more at certain points throughout the day I'll still get a headache and slip into a useless zombie state. It's bad, bad, bad.

sex and sex and sex and sex!

ribbons 04-22-2012 04:34 PM

I usually get an iced coffee mid-morning at work. If I'm really tired, it'll be caffeinated; otherwise I try to stick with decaf. Sometimes I'll get another coffee in the afternoon to get a little energy before going home, but if I make the mistake of getting caffeinated then I'm up half the night. I'm really sensitive to caffeine.

Burning Down 04-22-2012 04:36 PM

I rarely drink coffee in the morning. It's more of an afternoon/night thing for me. I just get up and go about my day.

Maybe sex would happen for me in the morning if my boyfriend and I actually woke up at the same time. Fuck having different schedules.

Frownland 04-22-2012 04:53 PM

I've heard these apple claims and gave it a try after weening myself off of coffee. It didn't work as well and here I am again drinking a cup of medium roast coffee.

Dr_Rez 04-22-2012 04:58 PM

I wish I could make it so my computer could wake me up with certain music. I have not figured out how to do so yet.

FETCHER. 04-22-2012 05:04 PM

I couldn't drink a full cup of coffee, it makes me far too hyper.

Most phones will let you pick an alarm tone to wake you up? Mine plays Here Comes the Sun when it's time for me to wake up.

I dont like the crappy midi and premade songs on there. No internet access so I cant buy a real song.

All I get is BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP Booooooooooooooooooooooop and let me tell you THATS NO WAY TO WAKE UP.

Stephen 04-22-2012 06:45 PM

As far as waking up I don't use an alarm. I just wake up when I need to. It works most of the time and when it doesn't I figure I needed the extra sleep. But I'd say I overslept maybe once last year so it's pretty reliable for me.

Once I'm out of bed though coffee is a pretty high priority. I've cut back to two cups a day but I can't go without.

I would like this effect from my coffee.

The morning shower is the best at waking me up. Fall out of bed, throw some pants over my head and put my legs through some sleeve holes of a jacket and wander to the bathroom to get the proper sort it out.

Caffeine addictions are horrible. I go out of my way to avoid becoming addicted to caffeine; I'll purposefully avoid developing patterns of drinking it, as I learned the hard way that too much caffeine and hard manual labour do not go together, at all. Cold sweats, nausea, etc... not a fun way to spend the morning.

Anyways, the closest thing I have to a wake up routine is how the morning cigarette is always closely followed by the morning poop. Other than that it's up in the air.

I'm confused. You avoid caffeine but smoke cigarettes? How is nicotine addiction better than caffeine?

The withdrawals are easier to deal with, imo.

A shower first thing in the morning always wakes me up. However I do drink a lot of coffee and it's always nice to have in the morning along with a cigarette to get you geared up for the day.

i hardly ever drink coffee

me dad came up with an ingenious way of waking me up, he climbs on my bed and pees all over me

or me brother will put on some action movie at top volume, during the explosion parts (this is only on weekends)

Sparky 04-24-2012 12:51 AM

he pee's on you intentionally or is he really senile?

Howard the Duck 04-24-2012 01:12 AM

intentionally

Sparky 04-24-2012 01:42 AM

don't you get tired of having to wash the sheets?

100% agreeance, same. I never was big on coffee and I got that energy drink faze out of my life. I'll drink maybe two cups of coffee a week, usually after dinner, and only as a dessert, not to prop me up...

In regards to OP; I really, really try to avoid the latest diet advice or craze. I just try to have a breakfast which is inline with my personal nutrition and health goals, so I try to get a good deal of fiber and protein during breakfast, which tend to be quite large and lengthy. I try to have my largest meal at breakfast, and then have them get progressively smaller as the day wears on.

It was a statement of personal preference, not a general medical claim. I find nicotine addiction to be far less bothersome than caffeine addiction. I go from smoking a dozen R.Y.O. cigarettes a day for a few weeks, and then have none for a few days and still be functional. When I was in the grips of caffeine addiction I had effects similar to what Pigeon mentioned, however I noticed that - no matter how much sleep I got the night prior - if my workday began before sun-up, I would be absolutely dead until sunshine was present.

RhysJPMusic 04-24-2012 05:41 PM

Never had a coffee in my life and can pretty much get up whenever I want whether it be after 1hr to 16 hrs sleep. Guess i'm just lucky with the way my body works though, coffee has always looked and smelled like poop to me.

Astronomer 04-24-2012 06:30 PM

I've heard the thing about apples before, something about the sugar gives you a kick - as would ingesting any sugary fruit or cereal instead of coffee.

I usually have a coffee in the morning, but NOTHING is effective in waking me up. I have to get up at 6am every day, and I've been doing it for about 2 years, and it is still a huge struggle. I have to put my alarm clock on the opposite side of my room so that I am forced to get out of bed to turn it off.

WWWP 04-24-2012 09:42 PM

I've heard that the smell of citrus wakes you up. Or at least that's what companies that have citrus-scented bath products tell me.
