I'm in the hospital and I'm BORED! What can I do?
Okay, so I had a bad bout of appendicitis. This is what I posted in the Mod Cave on Friday:
Quote:
I'm bored as fuck. I have a private room with a TV and Internet access (obviously), I have my laptop, iPhone (with music on it of course), some movies and TV shows, magazines, newspapers, and a couple of books. I also have some homework to do for school. But as someone with a fairly short attention span, I get bored really fast. I had some pretty major surgery done. Because my appendix ruptured, they had to go right in there and remove some other stuff and move shit around. I'm still on that damn liquid diet, although they are starting to feed me ice cream and milk because my doctor said it was okay. I can get up and walk around (they highly encourage that), but if I want to go farther than the hall that my room is in, they make me use a wheelchair so I don't rip my stitches open. Plus I get tired really fast. That's fine, at least I can get out of bed and go places. I'm hooked up to an IV machine so I have to roll that around everywhere I go. I'm in a private room and I can pretty much do what I want. The problem is, I've run out of ideas on stuff to do while I'm here. My parents, boyfriend, and friends come to visit me but when they're gone, time passes so slowly... I just want to have a little fun in the hospital and not get into trouble at the same time. Any suggestions? |
Turn off some life support machines.
|
Drink some tomato juice, spit it out and make them feel like Dr. House.

TV Tropes is a great website for the more geeky of us. Just look up your favorite book, television show, movie, band... whatever, really... and then read. And click links. And read some more. And click more. And get lost in it for over an hour.
If you like webcomics, go on an archive binge. Go to the first page and move on from there. I recommend The Order Of The Stick (DnD humor), pvpcomics.com (general geekiness humor), Multiplex (comic about the employees of a movie theater), Shortpacked! (comic about employees of a toy store), and anything else by the Shortpacked guy. He has links to all his other work on the website. You can also go to their "webcomics" section and find a HUGE list of webcomics in many different categories. Look around for one that fits your tastes. Cracked.com if you're interested in juvenile humorous articles and lots of Top 10 lists. Not usually "funny" per se, but there are some exceptions. Good way to waste time. StumbleUpon is excellent. Make a free account, enter in your personal tastes in the category list (which is enormous) and start "stumbling" to websites. Really good way to find... anything, really. I've used it to find humor websites, comics, videos, new music... very useful. Hope that helps. Get better! |
I don't have any suggestions, but I hope you feel better and recover quickly!

You could do some retro gaming. How about checking out The Curse of Monkey Island or Monkey Island 2 : LeChuck's Revenge? :)
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_BuENOh6AKq...key-island.jpg You can run them both on a windows computer using the program scummvm. ScummVM also lets you play lots of other classic adventure games. Let me know what you think and I could probably help you find those game files you'd need. We're only talking a few MB per game. :) Lemme know what you think! |
I'm quoting you all in one post here.

first and foremost....i wish you a speedy recovery :)
i know exactly what you're going through....i spent over a month in the hospital and had a very similar procedure..... actually reading your description is almost verbatim what i went through....except they forced me to walk daily....but i was not allowed to leave the hallway :)....it is seriously rough....i had family and at times friends would come by but time seems to just stop....or at least slooooooow down.....i actually think that the drugs are not just for pain but also to help you to keep your own sanity the liquid diet is horrible....but it sounds like you are on the mend to that WONDERFUL hospital food :p:.....its good to hear that they are giving you pills vs an iv drip....this means your system is strong enough to digest :) i suppose my suggestion to you.....having been exactly where you are....is to relax, sleep, heal....the quicker you do these the sooner you're out and back to life sorry i don't have any better suggestions.....but in your situation there really is not much else you can do |
The same idea as Cracked.com, Flavorwire is also pretty great.
|
Thanks Bob! Yeah, they force me to get up and walk a bit daily as well. I'm still hooked up to an IV - it's antibiotics or something, and an electrolyte solution to keep my fluid levels up. I think it's also infused with vitamins and minerals because I'm not really eating anything. I'm not on IV morphine anymore though. Trying to rest as much as possible, and that helps a lot.

On the bright side, if the infrastructure of the world collapses and we descend once again into tribalism, or if there is a cataclysmic annihilation of humankind and you're one of the survivors, you don't have to worry about getting appendicitis and dying!
Play Games As for wasting time, I fully reccommend creating an account on Kongregate and playing flash games to your heart's content. They have a huge range of games, and a lot of badges/achievements for the more popular ones, which quickly leads into a "just... one more badge..." mentality :P Make Games! If you're looking for something remotely productive to do and you've always wanted to learn how to program, Code Academy just recently started a load of online courses. At the moment they have 13 courses in Javascript, ranging from the most basic of basics to building simple games and tutorials in the more complex structures. If you're hesitant - coding is actually quite simple, once you get your head about what it looks like, and contrary to non-computer scientist belief, it's actually quite fun! |

Play SNES games. 5 days will FLY by.
http://files.ipherswipsite.com/snes9...1.53-win32.zip <--- Snes emulator. Download, set up controls, and load a ROM file into it with the game of your choice. edge|emulation | download Super Nintendo (SNES) ROMs <-- Here's an archive of every SNES game ever made. Download, unzip, load up. If you're confused by the fact you can download 1 game and get a lot of different files, just look for the ones that end with "[E][!]" or "[U][!]", those tags refer to unaltered European and United States releases of that game. The others will be stuff like fanhacked mods and stuff. Exactly the same applies if you want to play SEGA games btw: http://www.eidolons-inn.net/tiki-dow...php?fileId=574 <-- Emulator. edge|emulation | download Sega Genesis ROMs <--- Games |
I'm really sorry about your appendix bursting and all your pain and the surgery, but I'm glad you were able to get help so quickly. That's scary that one's appendix can get infected and burst so suddenly. :(
Possible things you can do to relieve boredom: (1) Do they allow flute-playing in the hospital? ;) If so, you can produce some morphine-inspired flute solos. (2) Become someone else for a while by going to Free Games at ROBLOX.com , where you can create your own character and play lots of funny and odd "virtual world" games for free with other people...presumably mostly kids, but you never know, since *I'm* there sometimes. :p: I play Roblox with my child and it's actually one video game that we *both* like to play. What's cool about Roblox is that the games (and there are over 50,000) are created by members, so they are often really odd. My favorite traditional games are paintball and some Star Wars Game where you can fly around and the goal is to try to hack people up with your light saber, although I prefer to just dance around them to see what they do. Answer: they usually are not amused and they kill me. :/ (3) Watch Youtube videos of BBC productions, like the period drama North and South :) Here, to start you off: North and South episode 1 part 1 - YouTube (4) Take up origami, make a bunch of origami dinosaurs, and have them fight: How to make an origami dinosaur - YouTube |
Awww thanks you guys! You are all so awesome. Erica - nope, can't play flute at the moment. I can't even breathe that deeply because it hurts a lot to do so.
|
Find a way to get more morphine...
|
^
I was waiting for that one. |

Honestly though, I'd rather stay off morphine. I had some pretty intense nightmares while on it... |
I hope u get better soon but Internet, T.V, laptop, iPhone, movies and magazines etc? You sound far more privileged than many stuck in hospital.
Most are stuck with hospital 'D.J'S' for days! |
Get someone to buy you a tambourine, play tambourine on morphine, win life.
|
Burning Down, very sorry to hear about your horrible bout with appendicitis and the rupture and surgery. I hope you will be completely out of pain before too long. Sorry I can't think of anything to add to the suggestions already posted, but I wish you a speedy and full recovery.
Take care and make sure you get plenty of rest! http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...BcrGkxIk2NWTAy |

i know exactly what you're talking about...but again all i can say is relax and heal and leave :)
seriously when i was in i watched two full season marathons of Americas Next Top Model.....and was so into the bullshit that i asked people to leave!....but that probably had more to do with the drugs i don't know about where you are.....but when i tried to lessen my dose the doctors actually became pushers.....and insisted that i use them more |
my appendix ruptured about 10 yrs ago as well
i think i was this close to death but they managed to clear up the toxins spent one and a half months in the hospital i just mostly slept |
I've never been seriously ill (touch wood) I had to spend one night in hospital when I was 15 and I cried so much at the thought. FT hospitals. Never had invasive surgery either.
Hope you get better soon Burning :), find some valium, you'll think you've only been in hospital for about an hour haha. |
I`m very sorry to hear what you`re going through, Burning Down. At least your prognosis is good, so bob`s advice makes a lot of sense.
You could also try taking a break from the compu and tv and do some old-fashioned things, like the origami that someone mentioned. > Do you have a window to look out of ? If you want, tell us precisely what`s outside the window, or just examine it yourself. > Draw the flowers, or something easier, in your room. > Imagine that you`re writing your life story; how much can you remember, how much have you forgotten ? > Find a book that you really enjoy. > Get a pack of cards and play patience. When I was in hosp for a couple of days, I felt so sorry for myself, but you have to remember; it does finish, and plenty of people have it so much worse. OK, now I`m sounding like my mum, so I`ll say goodbye, and wish you good luck, Burning Down. |

^ That doesn`t sound too bad; can you see the sky from your bed or is it blocked out by the university ?
If you can walk around, that`s great news. The worst thing is lying on a bed for days. For fun, I wanted to show you London`s biggest greenhouse, but I`m struggling, as usual to copy an image into a post. If you like, google Images of Kew Gardens and let me know how your greenhouse compares ! :) |
Compose some music, even if you don't know how to necessarily write music, to play later.

Become Black Metal. Varg Vikernes was able to become Black Metal in prison, so why can't you?

My recommendation: Get better and get out! :p: I can't even imagine how frustrating it is to be stuck in a bed almost the entire day. I bet you're gonna leap for joy on the way out of the hospital (or you know, whatever you can accomplish that's close to a leap anyway). |
