depends on how you define "best" but most sports (basketball being an exception) have scoring based off rare events so luck plays a huge role in any singular game.

the amount of events that occur in most sports is much higher than in a game of chess

im obviously not saying skill means nothing but luck exists in sports.

luck exists in everything. i'm just saying skill means a lot more.

I don't know what the numbers are in football/chess but Ive seen studies on hockey in which luck is almost just as important over an entire 82 game season than skill. id assume randomness is more prevalent in hockey than football and certainly chess tho. still I think its a facet that people have a tendency to attribute to skill anyway ("you have to be good to be lucky").
