Great thread!
I was wondering what people think of IDM music that isn't Aphex Twin. Seems a lot of people sort of relate the two together, but never go into discovering anything beyond him, or your standard stuff that most people relate to the genre. Also, would you consider Venetian Snares to be in the IDM category, even though it's technically Breakcore? |
Eh, I've never really understood why it's called IDM in the first place... What makes it more "intelligent" than other types of dance music? In fact... why the hell is mainstream alternative rock called "alternative rock" when it's not an alternative to mainstream because it is mainstream.

But as a general background, I've always looked at it as a different approach to "dance" music, where ordinary "dance" music relies on no more thought than being able to feel the rhythm and move to it, whereas "Intelligent" dance music is more exploratory and thinking, rather than rote driven movement. As for your other point, never knew the reason behind "alternative", to be honest. |
Yeah, I'd also like to know what IDM is. Aphex Twin just sounds like "electronic music" to me. Is it the break beats? Is Hrvatski IDM?
I think alternative rock is just an alternative to cock rock. |

Well, when alternative rock arose in the 1980s, it was (originally) an alternative to all the synth-poppy/new wave music that was being released at the time. So, therefore, it's name made sense (at that point).
Also, I've always pondered about the idea that The Velvet Underground creating alternative rock in the 60s (twenty years before it technically came about). What do you guys think of this theory? |

Honestly, it could be argued that the same effect is at work when people term electronic music as "Techno", although with perhaps slightly less ignorance driving the tendency. |
Freebase, tell me about my favorite IDM guy, "Son of the Electric Ghost". Also known as Bil Bless.

I've only heard one or two of his EPs, years ago. I don't own any, either. :( |

Just by searching him on Youtube and selecting the first result, Illness sounds very very familiar. Not sure if that song is from that album, but if so, this is definitely before my time of IDM exploration.
I like. |

I refuse to let such a relevant thread fade away.
I've a mind to sticky the sh*t out of this. |
Off Topic discussions... but isn't that what this entire subforum is for?

but i think it already started way before then with Link Wray, who could technically be the first punk/metal act - "Rumble" would cause parents to shit in their pants Quote:

IDM? You mean Like Autechtre, Aphex Twin, µ-Ziq, and Squarepusher? Those are all of the heavyweights in the "genre" even though they all sound completely different. I thought IDM was simply a way to pigeonhole electronic artists that can't be labeled, but who knows. (sorry, too lazy to quote posts) |
It's a term that loosely brackets the post-techno artists that emerged in the early 90s, but I wouldn't say there's a uniform sound, as usual it's just something that makes a music journalist's job easier.

Which, turns out it does the opposite since we're all sitting here arguing over it
