Default My house :)

Hey Guys!

I'm not gone! Not at all!
I'll be back after my house is finished.
As some of you may know I've bought a shiny new house.
It's not done yet. But we're getting there.
It's really a bungalow that was once designed for the elderly. So it's really practical and in a quiet environment. Just like I like it.
Since my hobby takes up quite some space and since I'm moving heavy devices around quite a lot, I figured I'd need a decent pair of stairs. My studio is next to my living room, because I'll be there most of the time anyway. The bedroom will be a storage room with a flight of stairs.
As I haven't got that much money we'll be doing most of it ourselves. Well, all of it really. Main projects are the stairs (my dad actually made them by hand, which is absolutely mindblowing). We actually had to rebuild a bit of the floor construction because if we'd just put a hole in the upper floor, the whole house would fall to pieces. Literally. Then there's the project of making a wall on the upper floor as I will use it as an attic, partly, and as my bedroom. Then there's going to be some windows in the roof because I want to have some sunlight in my bedroom. That's quite something too. And oh yeah, then there's the roof over my terrace. I'm sure there's an easier word for that, but you get what I mean.

Eitherway, I've made a very simple website on which I post pictures and video's of us working. You will notice that I don't work a lot. But that's because I'm just nog very good at this kind of thing. I'm so happy my friends are and that they are willing to help. I make coffee, get supplies, buy food, bake hamburgers and take pictures. They're fine with that. I really felt guilty when we started, but I'm getting used to this business.

Eitherway, have a look:
clicketyclick!
It's in dutch, so here's some info:
First link says "click here to see pictures that were made before I bought the house"

And then it goes
"Click here for pictures of week 21"
"Click here for video's of week 21"

Get that? Good
Enjoy the vids and the pics.
I won't be able to read the entire forum now, but I will reply to postings in this topic. So feel free to ask. It's nice when people are interested .

And again, I will be back as soon as possible.
I guess that will be somewhere in september.

Hey sk, glad to hear you're not gone. Just looking through the photos now quite a big project you've got on your hands! Looks like it is all coming together pretty well in the photos from week 30. Those stairs are incredible! Good luck!

Definitely not gone.
It's quite a project. The house itself burnt down in december 2009.
Everything except the upper floor and the outer walls is new. So that's nice.
But I do have quite some requirements and I want everything to be done before I go and live there. So yeah, quite the project.

Thanks a lot. I'm at the place right now. Not much to do at this moment, but my dad is finishing my stairs (he's plastering all the holes for the screws so he can paint them)

Hi s_k! Your house project is coming along beautifully and I'm glad to hear how you are doing.

That's so wonderful how your friends and parents are joining together to help update and add stylish details (like the slick new bathroom lever handle!) to make your new house a home just for you...complete with the green walls in a color I can tell you like, since you had green walls in your garage flat, too.

Your dad's stairs look very sturdy. What a labor of love! I remember how my dad designed and made a lamp for me to study with in my room. I always loved that lamp (it was a good design, created such that it never glared in my eyes) and the emotions that went behind those actions of his as he worked to make it.

I can see you and your friends and family are having fun on the project, too, with that cute dog as the cutest mascot ever falling asleep on wood and investigating the garden mud. The cake with sprinkles looked delicious and festive. The plants planned for the garden are delightful, too: so fanciful, with the single sunflower. It looks like your mom is the main gardener, although I noticed you and your dad diligently weeding!

And I loved the street in front of the house...the narrow street with little bicycle zones on either side of it, I think? I even noticed that the house across the street from yours has an ivy-covered archway. That's so charming! I liked the glimpses of scenery, such as the windmill, and that odd flying-saucer-like building.

The bathroom with the roll-in shower/wet floor is an excellent feature to have in a home so that people of all ages can use it. Are you having any grab bars installed? I just thought I'd recommend it in case you hadn't thought of having grab bars installed to improve safety.

I really get a sense of the joint endeavor by seeing your photos. I'm so glad that your home will be one filled with all that love right from the very start, built into the dark wood flooring, the tiles, the additional lighting, your shelves for all your tapes, and the stairs you'll go up and down every day to get to your room.

Thanks again for sharing! I love house construction and house design, and especially when it is a house of someone with whom I'm acquainted, so I'll having fun tracking your project. Good luck with the remaining weeks! It does look like you are all almost done.

Haha, actually the bathroom already was like that!
And about the green, well, to be honest.
My ex-girlfriend got my studio when she lived here. She needed a room for herself so I gave up mine. Got a pic of it here:

So it's her who liked that colour and when she moved out I decided to keep it and I somehow grew attached to it. It's somehow soothing.
We still had that bucket of paint and it was still in good nick, so we just used it again

I love the stairs. They're pretty wide and that's very practical as I carry a lot of big stuff (mostly audio) up and down the stairs. And I can't believe how fast that old guy (he's 63) fixed this thing. It's brilliant. He's very proud of it himself, too.

Haha, the Dog is really sweet. She doesn't really like going to the place as she isn't quite used to it yet. But you can really see how she tries to be as nice as possible. It's really nice to see.
I myself am having a pretty hard time as... well... I sort of found out that I'm not really good at this. I can make coffee and be witty. But I should stay out of the way when people start working. Makes me feel stupid every now and then, but I'm getting used to seeing people work for me. It feels wrong, but they really want me to stay away. They don't mind working though! They're just great.
The sprinkles on the cake, well, I wanted to bake a pie with Fleur (my ex-girlfriend who you see on the pictures with the cake ) to celebrate my new house, but it wasn't practical there yet. So we baked croissants and we decorated an existing cake. Almost the same.

Haha, well to be honest I wanted to start doing the garden when the house was finished. Nothing is definitive yet. I'm sure going to keep the sunflower. But the rest is only temporary. There will be a bigger terrace and there will be a pond. I will also build a little shed (about where the poppy's are, they were already there ) for my lawnmower, bike and gardening tools. There will be some grass and around the pond and against the fence there will be plants and flowers. I like plants. I'm just not very good at keeping them alive and I hate to see them die. So I really have to be careful at what I'm going to put in my garden. Luckily my parents are very good at this. We've always had beautiful gardens

I wouldn't call it narrow, but perhaps it's different there.
There's indeed, as we call it 'bike suggestion lanes' next to the road. You are allowed to drive on them with your car, but they mark the area where a bike an drive relatively safely.
The house itself isn't that special from the outside, but it's in a really nice neighbourhood indeed.
These pics:

are all taken from... four, five minutes walking from my house. There's a lot of water too

That odd flying saucer like building wasn't anywhere near. A friend of mine works there. It's called the "Evoluon". You might want to look that up. We had to go there to get a loooot of coax-cable for my radio and TV reception throughout the house

Not sure about grab bars yet. May be handy. I will make a glass panel there though, so I won't get the entire room wet. I will make it along the whole width of the bathroom so I don't have a small shower like most people do. I'm a big guy, so that's not very practical for me

Everyone likes the house. It has some sort of appeal to it. It's not spectacular, but it's light and it feels good. I think it's called 'feng shui'. I'm very sensitive to that.

I was beginning to wonder why our posts haven't crossed recently, as stated above, that looks like quite the project, and it looks good. Nice audio collection, very neat and organized, including your massive album collection. I'm sure it'll be a hell of a house.
