Words/Names You Can Never Spell Correctly

There are some words and names that I have a mental block everytime I try to spell them, and I never learn no matter how many times I have to look them up.

Examples
Niedermayer ("e" instead of "a")
Randomly (always go with the double "l")

Freebase Dali 04-12-2011 04:53 PM

I sometimes have issues with "recommend", where I'll instinctively type "reccomend", even when I know it's not spelled that way.
"unnecessary" is another one where I sometimes spell it "uneccessary" or "unneccesary".
I also find the need to recite the "I before E except after C" rule more often than I'd like to admit.

Heh, I used to spell "originally" as "origionally" for the longest time, until around 2005, when I arbitrarily decided to use spell-check. Boy, was I embarrassed. The sad thing is no one ever corrected me. I wish they had. :(

I'm guilty of "recommend" as well.

The originally thing reminds me of when I used to work in a bakery. We had to write on cakes and one of my co-workers wrote "Congradulations" on one, and the person he was writing it for corrected him. He told me that he'd always spelled it that way, and had written it on other cakes before too. I guess everyone else was just too embarassed to correct him.

MoonlitSunshine 04-12-2011 06:09 PM

Email, and relation. I Alllways end up typing emial and realtion, though they're more consistent typos than anything! Can't think of any words I always spell wrong... at the moment anyway.

Burning Down 04-12-2011 07:17 PM

I always used to have problems with the word "definitely". When I was a kid I would often spell it "definetly" or "defenitly". Horrible, I know :o:

One word that I notice a lot of other people have trouble with, but I don't, is "ridiculous". I always see people spelling it as "rediculous" and I can't even tell you how much that grates on my nerves. I have a friend who constantly spells it that way, even after being corrected numerous times, and she is a 4th year English major in university. Go figure.

CanwllCorfe 04-12-2011 08:32 PM

For me, the worst word is restaurant. I always spell it as restaraunt.

It's funny because "restaraunt" seems closer to the way the word is actually pronounced.

Incidentally, I have a similar problem with the word "guarantee".

Sansa Stark 04-12-2011 08:39 PM

Restaurant was one of my spelling bee words :) I found it easier to remember if you think of it as where you rest a(nd) (yo)u rant because of the bad food

I always mix up the i and e in receive

Exactly! That's why I screw it up.

I almost went to one, but I was way too shy. My English teacher bought me a bottle of Sprite for spelling seizure right. It might as well have been $1,000.

I don't know why, but I can never spell Matthew McConnaughy's last name properly. I've had to check it every single time I've gone to spell it (which has been numerous occasions, as I had a guinea pig named Matthew McConnaughy) and just can't seem to remember it, ever.

I usually spell it McConaughey, McConnaughey, or something similar. It feels like there needs to be an 'e' in it for some reason.

That's the right way.

CanwllCorfe 04-12-2011 09:03 PM

Tim Beers. My name is easy.

simplephysics 04-12-2011 09:24 PM

necessarily.. Spell check still gets me on that every time.

Rage Against the Machine 04-12-2011 09:25 PM

parallel. I lost the 3rd grade spelling bee on that one.

Rhythm, too.

Yeah, trying to sound it out doesn't do much good for me either.

Yes!

Janszoon 04-12-2011 09:30 PM

Not too long ago I read a companywide email from a coworker who misspelled "but" as "butt" and I have to admit I found it hysterically funny.

Thom Yorke 04-12-2011 09:39 PM

I usually spell vacuum with two c's.

I ironically spelled retarded "retarted" for a long time.

Yup. It's a shitty situation.

While we're on the topic, my German teacher told me about how he likes screwing with the German students by showing them how screwed up the English phonetic system is. It really cracked me up.

Tough "This word is pronounced 'tuff' "
Though "So how is this one pronounced?" "Thuff?" "No!"
Thought "This one?" "Thout?" "No!"
Through "This one?" "Throw?" "No!

VEGANGELICA 04-17-2011 11:16 AM

Ironically, a word I often misspell is "misspelling."

I can never remember if it has 2 s's or one. Generally, to avoid this issue, I just write, "I don't spell such and such correctly." Or I google the word. I've googled it a lot. I googled "mispelling" before making this post. :/

I hope, now that I've written about my spelling problem, I'll never misspell 'mispelling' again.

Paedantic Basterd 04-17-2011 11:22 AM

You've spelled it a number of ways already in your single post, haha.

CHCl3 04-17-2011 11:35 AM

The word I used to have problems with is "independence". I used to spell it "independance" for some reason.

Onomatopoeia (Thanks Hey Arnold! for introducing this word to me ) also kicks may ass a lot as the only reason that it's spelled right in this post is due to copy and paste.

Well, *that* was intentional, Pedestrian. :) At least I didn't write "missspelling," as if I were talking about...

Ee-gads, I never hazard a shot at "onamatopia" without checking how to spell it first, too. It is a great word, though, isn't it?

Sansa Stark 04-17-2011 12:00 PM

I can never spell Norweigan right

I didn't even do it right then
I don't know what gets me about it

EvilChuck 04-17-2011 12:20 PM

Recommend is one I sometimes struggle with, I am always tempted to out an extra c in, and maybe take an m out. SO I can choose between 'reccommend', 'reccomend' and recommend'.

I'm pretty sure its one c two m's.

Definite(ly) was one I used to struggle with, I'd always use an a instead of the second i. I also have an issue with one hand typing quicker than the other, so the letters in words sometimes get jumbled up where my right hand will move quicker then the left.

GeddyBass2112 04-17-2011 02:21 PM

recieve is one that always trips me up....

glastonelle 04-17-2011 05:38 PM

Espescially. Turns out its actually spelt 'especially' -.-

Burning Down 04-17-2011 05:44 PM

Another word I always used to have trouble with is exercise. Always used to spell it "excercise"

DoctorSoft 04-17-2011 09:13 PM

I have perfect spelling. I never misspell words.

pooka 04-17-2011 09:31 PM

half the dictionary. english or swedish.

Zaqarbal 04-19-2011 06:30 PM

Strictly speaking, we all continually misspell names. For instance, all those German actors and film directors who worked in Hollywood. Many times the English pronunciation has become the "international standard", instead of the original one. Billy Wilder, Marlene Dietrich (maɐˈleːnə ˈdiːtʁɪç), etc. The same happens with Italian surnames.

Indeed, sometimes pronunciation changes everything....

Personally, there is just one thing that gets on my nerves. Every time I see this:

Even the news media can't agree on that one.
