A tip to those who come in only to find the channel mostly inactive, it may be a good idea to write the name of the person you want to get into contact with, f.eks "hi tore". Many IRC clients will notify you when someone have written your IRC nickname in a message.

It's a chat room. If I log in and don't hear anything for 10 minutes I presume it's quiet. I asked if anyone was around and still got no answer.

well if you stick around a bit longer even if someone doesn't answer right away. They may come back to their pc and notice that you said that and respond but it may be at 11 mins.

Unless it's via singing telegram, I don't know how much difference that'd make.
