He was a core member of The Comic Strip Presents, a group of "alternative" comedians who did a series of short comedy films on Channel 4 in the 1980s and onwards. And it's there that his wit and range and rebelliousness really shine through imo.

Indeed. Haven't rewatched that show in over a decade but that's the ep I remember the best.
