Literally, moments ago, I was organizing my downloads of Gentle Giant while reading some descriptions of their albums on Wikipedia. On a whim I was checking the bios of some of the band members (also on Wiki) and when I clicked on the Wiki article for Ray Shulman read that he just passed away yesterday and it had just made the news today!

Gentle Giant have confirmed via social media the death of co-founding bassist and composer Ray Shulman. Elder brother Derek posted on Facebook, "I was with him until the end as he bravely battled a long illness. At least I know he is now at peace."

Born in 1949, Ray was the youngest of the Shulman brothers and, along with siblings Derek and Phil, was a founder member of Simon Dupree And The Big Sound. In 1970, the brothers formed Gentle Giant along with guitarist Gary Green, keyboard player Kerry Minnear and drummer Martin Smith.

Oh man I missed this one.

Ray was an incredible multi instrumentalist and he brought so much variety to Gentle Giant's sound.

Who cares? There is no afterlife and I won't know either way.

Ryuichi Sakamoto, a trailblazing composer and producer who was one of the first musicians to incorporate electronic production into popular songcraft, has died at the age of 71.
