Horrible news. RIP to both. Grimes is integral to so many of my favourite jazz albums, what an incredible career. **** this virus.

Saw Grimes at Big Ears with Nicole Mitchell and Tomeka Reid. It was as great as you'd expect from that line-up.
Strong playing, but he had to be helped on and off the stage which added a touch of sadness.
Not sure if he had Covid-19, but apparently Logan did.

I didn’t know he spent 30 years living hard like that in LA.

OK, thanks for that info. Damn.
Both of these guys went into hiding for decades
and the stories of them being found are pretty remarkable.

It’s crazy that playing on Unit Structures alone wouldn’t set you up for life. Enter, Evening was even on that super popular Smithsonian jazz sampler. Plus, those Ayler records. It’s great he was rediscovered but damn he had to feel like wtf does a man have to do.

I was thinking too that Warren Smith was also part of that group that had Reid, Mitchell and Grimes.
...and Warren Smith played on Logan's comeback album with Dave Burrell,
so connections are there too in a wobbly manner I suppose.
