Found out yesterday that one of the two people that helped me graduate from high school passed away in his sleep two nights ago. He was my vice principal at my high school.

Now for a bit of back story: Basically, when I was a senior in high school, I had been told in the last few months of my senior year that since I didn't pass the reading comprehension part of the WASL test, I wasn't going to graduate. My vice principal (Mr Anderson) and my English teacher back in my senior did everything in their power to make sure that I walked to get my diploma. And through a lot of different things I had to do in terms of doing worksheets etc etc, I was finally able to graduate with my graduating class. Coincidentally, the English teacher that had helped me get to that point also passed away about a year after I graduated because she had a brain tumor that she didn't know about until it was too late.

So, this post is also to let both of them know that I am forever in their debt for helping me get to the point where I was going to be able to graduate. There was a time when I honestly didn't think I was going to, and Mr Anderson along with my English teacher are to thank for that.

People don't realize the impact teachers can make on someone's life. My favorite teacher passed away some time ago but I'll always remember the encouragement he gave me and others. Sorry, to hear about your Vice Principal, Kiiii.

Thanks. It's all good. Apparently he passed away in his sleep so at least he went peacefully. It's crazy to think that it was nearly 10 years ago that I was worried that I wouldn't graduate. I'll always remember them as the two people that helped me get through.

Sorry to hear about that, Kiii. At least it was a peaceful passing. Nice to know there are still people in the education system who want to help and not just coast along with the flow.

Thanks TH. Yeah, it was truly magnificent to experience it. I was never great and am still not very good at reading comprehension which is probably obvious around here. I get anxious when I take tests as well so they helped me figure things out. I had to do two big binders full of worksheets in order to prove that I was eligible for graduation. I also had to pass two tests that basically went over what I did in the binders and I also had to make sure I had gotten the answers correct on the worksheets. A few weeks went by when I had turned all my stuff in, and then I was told one day about a month before my graduation that I had met all requirements and was going to graduate.

Much appreciated TH. I've gotten better through the years but I still struggle with it behind the scenes. But yeah, it's crazy to me it was so long ago but it still has en enormous impact on me when I hear about things that relate to him and my english teacher.

I taught a girl whose mother was dying from cancer and she didn’t have the credits to graduate. She told me she didn’t want to have to tell her mom she was being retained. I spent hours and hours seeing to it she passed. I tutored her as much as a could and negotiated with really difficult personality type teachers to bump her grades. You wouldn’t believe how ridiculous some teachers were

Me: yeah well her mom has been on chemo and she’s only 14 and taking care of her little sister- cooking cleaning

Teacher- that doesn’t mean she can skip her math homework

Me: I’ll see to it that she learns how to work with fractions. I just don’t want her to feel guilty about upsetting her mom.

Teacher- she needs to do this that and the other thing

Me: ok - I’ll come back and talk to you tomorrow

I even had to threaten one teacher that if she didn’t pass I was going to have to demand to see documentation that every single one of her accommodations were followed.

She thanked me on the last day.

This doesn’t mean I’m not a racist **** but she was black.
