Default Combat Training/Self Defense

So, I realized I'm basically a wimp. Not that I'm cowardly or afraid to fight, but basically I suck at it and would (and have) have my butt handed to me. I'm looking into getting some Martial Arts books, in particular I'm looking into Jeet Kune Do and Mixed martial arts. Also looking into US Military hand to hand training.

Are there any books or techniques you can recommend to help me out?

I dunno, I guess I'd rather stay out of a fight .

I don't want to pick them, but I'd rather be prepared when the situation might arise and I need to protect myself or in the future my family.

I'm highly skilled in the Du Jak Chit style of fighting. I'm pretty quick to put it to use when needed.

You could always buy a gun and go to the shooting range. Thats far more effective than any roundhouse kick could hope to be. Im serious as well, I keep a handgun locked in my room just incase some situation arises in which I may need it.

I'd rather not worry about carrying a concealed weapon.
It's also not as badass.

I always just run away when somebody tries to hurt me.
It's a different thing when someone triest to hurt my girlfriend.
It never really got that far, but I know I'm a different person then .

eff you people.

EDIT: Funny story, I went to download a couple of physical fitness/combat training books and got about 60 of them from a torrent. Two of them detail how to "kill your marks silently and effectively"... :O
