We can leave this open until the end of the month, forget the voting round and just count the nominations if people would prefer it that way but it might be too late now.

I prefer doing it this way.

Sorry. I didn't remember how it was done in years past and didn't notice the explanation in your other thread. But, honestly, what is the point of doing this way with nominations and everything? I'd love it if someone could explain the advantage because right now it just feels like voting twice for no good reason to me.

I don't see why it would be too late.

Why?

Because if nominations are also votes, then theres a huge bias to recently active posters. If the nominations are nominations, and the votes are seperate, then a person who was only active 10 months ago might get 1 nomination, but that nomination might get more than one vote as people see the name and are reminded of that person.

Theres also the fact it forces people to reconsider their vote at least once, which means more thought goes into it.

On top of THAT, its easier to pick from a small pool of nominees than it is to pick from the whole userbase over a year. You end up with people who didn't nominate anyone, but who will still vote once they see a category contains someone they like.

Laziness. Some people just don't want to fill out the form or only have a strong opinion about 1 or 2 categories.
And some people just don't want to rock the boat.

It's not too late, if people want it done that way. But given I'm meant to be closing this thread and moving on on Tuesday, it could be a little late to change the rules now?

Before I started I read the discussions between the mods (in the cave) where RT suggested nominations as well as voting, Tore agreed and nobody objected so he started it up. Then I followed the format he used that year and did the same again, implementing a few changes people had suggested.

It seems that initially it was believed that including the nominations round would hopefully make it more fun and create more discussion and interest along the way. Whether it did or not I have no idea as last years was the first I was involved with.

I get the feeling that some members do fill out a list of nominations, then they look through the thread and change them because they voted for somebody that nobody else has. They can see the names that keep getting nominated and so decide that they would rather have their vote affect the result than "waste" it. Personally I dont see why anybody would do this as it's a bit of fun but thats the way I see it.

This way people can do both. And it's still fun, hopefully.

I think in the future, allowing people to choose up to three people to nominate, then taking the names that appear most frequently and allowing a vote could work well. The way I'm seeing it now, is:

- Those who've nominated think the vote is superfluous
- Those who were waiting to see the vote might be discounted if the format now changes

Also, there very well could be sway in the public nominations, not to mention I'm sure there are lots of deserving people who've been left out, because only one nomination can be made per category.

Christ, this thing doesn't need even more rules.

Paedantic Basterd 12-19-2010 10:59 AM

...Not more rules, just changes to them.

It's a shame that this thing has become more about who wins than who you think deserves it.

Everything in this place seems to be run into the ground lately, you can't just express an opinion anymore, you have to rate it & classify it and rank it with others too and have a nice chart to show for it at the end.

It's like the compilation threads, they used to be about opening your mind to new stuff and saying what you thought about it, now they're just about playing a game of guess the person who supplied the song and thats about it.

This place is getting really boring lately.
