The Seasonal Eggnog Thread
This thread will probably be bumped around the same time every year, because in most places it's only sold seasonally.
http://eggnog.ws/wp-content/uploads/2007/07/eggnog1.jpg Eggnog is one of my favorite parts of this season. It can be enjoyed plain, spiced, or spiked :D Discuss your undying affection for this drink of the Gods. |
Not a big fan of eggnog. Huge fan of eggnog spiced latte from Starbucks. :D
|
I've had that. In fact, I have the nog in everything this time of year. Last year I gained a lot of weight from those Eggnog Shakes at Jack n the Box. It took a stomach virus and weeks of crackers and cheese to undo that binge. And now I feel it coming on again......
|
Sadly, this thread wasn't bumped this year:
http://www.musicbanter.com/lounge/59...ke-eggnog.html I can close the other one or this one. Dealer's choice. Or merge. |
The other one is locked already it appears, and it seems to be full of people who I've never seen. Update time?
My vote goes toward this genuine Conan owned and operated thread. |
I have a friend who every year tries to break her personal record of liters of eggnog drank before Christmas.

And please feel free to reign over the eggnog. I don't know why the last one was locked, but yea... Anyway, I can drink eggnog. (alcoholic version is the only one I feel compelled to drink) I definitely think it goes great with cold weather. Coming from an alcoholic who can pretty much drink anything, I don't know how much that opinion weighs, but I do like the eggnog mood. |
Never tried the stuff. I'll probably get around to try it this year.
But from what i've heard, it's one of things that make the holday season so great. |
You can substitute eggnog itself with Mad dog 20/20 and it will still be great, in terms of how much easier it would be to deal with your family during the holidays (but not after), but I guess there's a sense of communion that comes from grouping with relatives that will drink eggnog over MD20/20.
|
Since I don't drink anymore (at least not until it's proper for me to) I have to stick with the non-alcoholic varieties, which doesn't bother me too much since I always felt the alcohol takes away from the noggy goodness.

A bit of eggnog that's (covertly or not) 40%+ Sailor Jerry, for example. Makes the holidays quite manageable. |
I'd rather drink cat piss than 20/20, but when I'm around the parents during holidays, the only reason I don't drink cat piss is because it probably doesn't get you drunk. I will drink any alcoholic drink you put in front of me at that point.

My affection for eggnog wasn't undying, though. Now that I don't eat eggs and dairy products because people kill the millions of baby brother chicks of egg-laying hens, and raise most of the hens in awful conditions, and take the male calves away from the mothers to kill them at a young age, I like to drink soynog around the winter holidays. Soynog puts me in a festive mood; eggnog makes me sad...and then angry. I like that soynog doesn't involve anyone hurting and eventually killing livestock animals. Another advantage of soynog is that, unlike eggnog, it contains healthful fats (rather than saturated fats in cream) and zero cholesterol. Yet soynog retains a sweet, spicy nutmeg flavor. There are some pretty good vegan recipes for soynog that you can make at home (Spiced Vanilla Soy Nog: Sixth Day of Vegan Treats. - Healthy. Happy. Life.). And no fears of salmonella poisoning, as with eggs! Soynog: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Dwex9AQ8Iu...soy-nog-41.jpg ...made from soybeans...which even look like mini-eggs! :D http://www.elements4health.com/image...d/soybeans.jpg |
The Gods are displeased with your sacrilege.
|
soynog is actually really good....a great alternative for those with lactose problems and those who choose a cruelty free diet
i've been toying with the idea of making home made eggnog ice cream for the family this thanksgiving :) |

I've always wanted to make some home made Eggnog. I've had homemade, but I didn't make it. |
I don't think there's a place that sells eggnog over here, so I'm pretty much planning on doing my own this year. I'm an eggnog virgin!
|
|
lol silk nog.
|
I never ever had eggnog. Might want to try that out sometime.
I don't know anyone in my environment that ever had eggnog. It's not very Dutch, I guess. Well, one way to find out ;) |

Guess it's typically american then?
|
What exactly does it taste like?
|
We don't drink eggnog here. In Scandinavia, we drink Gløgg instead which is a sort of spiced wine enjoyed quite warm (but not boiling) which is usually quite sweet. In this country, we like to drink it with raisins and bits of almond in it.
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4003/...a24712e92f.jpg Not the best picture, but it shows how I like mine. Nice and chunky with lots of almond! Not 100% sure how the danes and swedes generally prefer theirs. :) |

I don't think you are missing much by not having egg nog. Quote:
And that name is great. Gløgg! :p: Say, speaking of Scandinavian holiday traditions, I just went to a St. Lucia fest in Minnesota, which is celebrated there thanks to all those Scandinavians who immigrated. I don't think they brought the Gløgg with them, though. Only lutefisk. :( |
Quote:
Gløgg is okay actually, I too think I would prefer it to eggnog which I think sounds almost dangerous. Can you really drink egg mixed with sugar and alcohol without getting sick? I bet I can't :p: |
Quote:
"Glühwein" is German for "Glow wine", which is probably based on the glowing, warm feeling this wine provides you with :) |

Interesting! It must be a mainly American thing. All I know about Eggnog is that once a restaurant I was working at had Eggnog as a Christmas special kind-of thing and I dropped my iPhone in it.
|
I didn't see that one coming. Lol ;D.
