I think it would be less weird if he weren't still a currently living person. That goes for naming the airport after him as well.

Yeah. What can you do though? Texas pride and all... heck I'm proud to be in Texas, not because of George Bush - because of Blind Lemon Jefferson, Lightnin' Hopkins, and Townes van Zandt. Let's build statues of them.

I don't see anything wrong with building a statue of someone who's still alive. It's not like death is instant recognition.
