ADDIE. Well, there are people who eat the earth and eat all the people on it like in the Bible with the locusts. Then there are people who stand around and watch them eat it. Sometimes I think it ain't right to stand and watch them do it.
[From The Little Foxes by Lillian Hellman] (Then later in the play) ALEXANDRA. All in one day: Addie said there were people who ate the earth and other people who stood around and watched them do it. And just now, Uncle Ben said the same thing. Really, he said the same thing. Well, tell him for me, Mama, I'm not going to stand around and watch you do it. Tell him I'll be fighting as hard as he'll be fighting...some place where people don't just stand around and watch. |
"It is the stretched soul that makes music, and souls are stretched by the pull of opposites—opposite bents, tastes, yearnings, loyalties".

Quote:
Gloomy Sunday with a hundred white flowers I was waiting for you my dearest with a prayer A Sunday morning, chasing after my dreams The carriage of my sorrow returned to me without you It is since then that my Sundays have been forever sad Tears my only drink, the sorrow my bread... Gloomy Sunday This last Sunday, my darling please come to me There'll be a priest, a coffin, a catafalque and a winding-sheet There'll be flowers for you, flowers and a coffin Under the blossoming trees it will be my last journey My eyes will be open, so that I could see you for a last time Don't be afraid of my eyes, I'm blessing you even in my death... The last Sunday |

"Once a woman turns against you, forget it. They can love you, then something turns in them. They can watch you dying in a gutter, run over by a car, and they'll spit on you."
Charles Bukowski "When first I ended, then I first began, The more I travelled, further from my rest, Where most I lost, there most of all I wan, Pinèd with hunger rising from a feast. Methinks I fly, yet want I legs to go, Wise in conceit, in act a very sot, Ravished with joy amid a hell of woe ; What most I seem, that surest am I not. I build my hopes a world above the sky, Yet with the mole I creep into the earth, In plenty I am starved with penury, And yet I surfeit in the greatest dearth ; I have, I want, despair and yet desire, Burned in a sea of ice and drowned amidst a fire." Michael Drayton |
"Inside every cynical person there is a disappointed idealist."
-George Carlin |
"Any idiot can face a crisis - it's day to day living that wears you out."
--Anton Chekhov |
"If thou but show thy face again when darkness doth at midnight reign, the darkness flies, and light is hurled round about the silent world."
Thomas Carew (1594-1640) "No lie is strong enough to kill the roots that work below; from your rich dust and slaughtered will a tree with tongues will grow." Countee Cullen (1903-1946) |
"Being in politics is like being a football coach. You have to be smart enough to understand the game and dumb enough to think it's important."
--Eugene J. McCarthy |
Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months. Oscar Wilde
Sometimes a scream is better than a thesis. Ralph Waldo Emerson I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it. Voltaire |
