It may have resurfaced via an internet meme but it's not where it originated. It's a psycho-social activity/challenge that predates internet popularity.

My sisters who are in their thirties had a chuckle when I mentioned the game because they used to joke about it when they were in high school about 15 years ago and they didn't get it off the internet...
