lol... there are actual people out there that take it seriously?

I thought (naively, apparently) that this was just some ridiculous internet thing that was perpetrated by the same people who actually say "lol" in person. I'm probably not hedging my bets by assuming those folks are a significant minority...

It's not an interenet thing persay. I think it actually predates the internet.

Believe me, if I could fake a laugh effectively just by saying lol in person, I would do that. But I'm relegated to just making it apparent when I think someone is unfunny.
In the opposite scenario, I will laugh.

I do use it sarcastically about 95% of the time. If someone cracks a bad joke or something, I'll be like, "lol".
