I thought (naively, apparently) that this was just some ridiculous internet thing that was perpetrated by the same people who actually say "lol" in person. I'm probably not hedging my bets by assuming those folks are a significant minority...

It's not an interenet thing persay. I think it actually predates the internet.

I say 'lol' and 'btw' in person. I'm not even sure why, it's really fucking stupid come to think of it.

I guess I could at least blame the internet for its pervasiveness then? I'm not letting the internet get off scot-free.

Believe me, if I could fake a laugh effectively just by saying lol in person, I would do that. But I'm relegated to just making it apparent when I think someone is unfunny.
In the opposite scenario, I will laugh.

I do use it sarcastically about 95% of the time. If someone cracks a bad joke or something, I'll be like, "lol". :rolleyes:

Yeah, it does predate the internet. My older siblings who are old said they heard of it when they were in high school and not through any internetty source.
