Default Chinese Traffic Jam

Has anyone else heard about this? It's some of the craziest shit I've ever heard: a 62 mile traffic jam near Beijing that's lasted ten days so far. According to the Wall Street Journal blurb I saw earlier today, in some spots traffic is moving as slow as a third of a mile per day. There are people who have been stuck in this for days.

I found an NPR article about it that goes into some detail.

I saw that the other day. I don't know what could possibly cause something that bad. I want to pull my hair out when I go to LA for the weekend. I couldn't begin to fathom this. I'm sure I would end up filing a stolen car claim and walking home.

all i know is that i would HATE being the poor shmuck in China's Department of Transportation (or whatever they call it) who has to take responsibility for letting this mess happen to this extent.

You know I always hear about how bad L.A.'s traffic is, but in all the times I've been there I've never experienced anything that's even close to as bad as D.C., Boston or New York traffic.

That's insane. Are there absolutely no exits there?

Oh, and Chinese Traffic Jam sounds like a post-rock band. Moves just as slowly too.

but, as a post rock fan.... I disapprove. not all post rock is slow and boring. Ever heard of Battles or Maserati?
I must admit that was that was clever, though. might be my new sig.

I'm sure there are exits, but if you're only moving 1/3 mile a day it's going to take a hell of a long time to get to the nearest one.

Yea, I know the pain. Recently a truck carrying Ethanol and some other stuff had overturned and the highway got blocked off... took me almost an hour to travel a little less than a mile to the diversion.

But this Chinese traffic jam... jesus christ...

Yikes. I feel that. I'll never forget the time my regular drive from Boston to Philly took me 11 hours instead of the normal 5-6, almost all because of traffic in the Bronx. To top it off I had a fever and really had to pee. I've never come so close to trying to piss in a cup while driving before or since.

But like you say that's just child's play compared to this Beijing shit.

Huh... suddenly I feel very petty about all the roadwork surrounding my neighborhood. Oh and a mighty lol at the post-rock comment.
