I'm surprised no-one has taken the angle of the record company proposition being a challenge to make some poppy, commercially viable but interesting music... it's not an oxymoron either. Besides, it's a lot easier to sit back and play the music you want to play than to try your talent across the board and immerse yourself in something outside your comfort zone.

bottom - BAAAAAAAAAHHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA that's also exactly what 'alternative' rock was supposed to do before 'indie', same as 'underground, and 'new wave', and 'punk' rock, and etc. etc. seems to me the biggest issue with selling out isn't whether or not it's right or wrong but whether or not the individual is direct or indirect about it. the people who 'humbly' claim that they really don't want to be big and just want to start a 'modest' band that can pay their food or rent but definitely 'not' sell out are total and absolute jokes. |

the poll options suck there's no middleground option, all the options are either "i'd completely sell-out" or "i'd never sell out"

What's the middle ground? You either sell out or you don't. Or there's the "I'd make the music I want to make and if people like it great option." but that always sounds really false to me.

i love music...
i care nothing for fame and riches, that **** just pulls you down imo. my band would/will most likely never become even vaguely famous but hopefully we may get a decent little cult following due to our ability and musical talent. famous bands are crappy bands in my experience. (not always, just about 80% of the time.) |

That's a higher degree of selling out. You can sell out without having your music on adverts and stuff, regardless of whether you agree with it. There really is no middle ground option for me, you either sell out or you don't. I think most people would if they knew the right formula, if there even is a formula.
