She keeps the look both to encourage women who don't have the choice of having hair to not be ashamed of their condition but to also challenge the social norm of what is attractive. She's also an activist for getting the media and fashion industry to depict bald women in a more positive and empowering way, and she has appeared in various media spreading the idea. You can poke fun of her ears if you want, but she deserves a great deal of respect. While not common there are bald supermodels. Eve Salvail (best known for playing the blue opera singing alien chick from The Fifth Element) is the most well known. There's also Sudanese model Alek Wek and Indian model Diandra Soares. And there are models like Anna Fitzpatrick and Margaret Baker who have alopecia and embrace their baldness instead of hiding it. Quote:

I find any woman that choses to go bald in public either by choosing the look or not hiding her condition (alopecia, chemo or any other cause) to be an inspiration. But Sharon taking the extra step and actually trying to do something about the media's depiction of bald women makes her special indeed.
Thanks to people that share her kind of attitude you do see more women sporting the look as a fashion statement. Sometimes being bald can open up new career opportunities for a woman instead of it being a career killer as feared. Some modeling agencies like to promote exotic and progressive looks so I see an increasing demand for bald models being a possible outcome in the future. |

I find it really amazing that Sharon lost her hair during cancer treatment, but then chose to keep the look afterward. And that she would devote so much of her time to promoting bald beauty. Wow. Anybody else would have just grown her hair back and put the experience behind her. Sharon obviously found a calling in it.

She actually shaved her head BEFORE the chemo I think, I think when she found out that she had cancer she realised that hair was the least of her worries and decided to just get it over with. And that she doesn't feel inferior or less sexy is definitely refreshing, it's even more so that this is how she wants to look.
It's sad and disgusting that women feel so ashamed of what other people think of them and how they look when they're trying to fight for their survival. |

YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.
The comments here are appalling, just want to show an example of the usual YouTube sentiment regarding girls shaving their heads. YouTube commenters are notorious for being the most ignorant motherf*ckers on the internet. |

Yikes! The comments are usually pretty ignorant and rude, but that one got a heap of crap. Totally unfair. There's this mentality among some people that if you put something on public display, it's all right to brutally criticize it without concern for anyone's feelings. This is not even like bashing some movie star who will probably never even hear or care what they think. These comments are insulting people to their faces, without having the balls to actually face anybody. Nice way to thank them for sharing something.
I like your response. |

Youtube is a great site in theory ruined by a terrible, retarded community. As are most websites that are allowed to have communities.
I don't blame the internet, I blame people. In the outside world people wear masks and on the internet these masks come off and seemingly decent people can reveal themselves to be truly despicable human beings. The internet is a place you should always be cautious about when revealing things about yourself because you're exposed to the world and there is no code of ethics on the internet. Most of these people don't even mean any harm. They just honestly don't get that what they're doing is inappropriate.
Between genuinely nasty people and just plain stupid ones, stupidity does far more damage than malice, I think. |
