For a guy, shaving body hair up here in any way would definetly be seen as a bit feminine. Probably, spending any amount of time or products on beautifying yourself beyond a normal shower with some shampoo would. It's worth mentioning again that I'm presentlyin the high arctic, though. Everyone here let's their hair grow, wherever it is. There's testosterone in the air.

The worst machismo environments up here must be in the miner camps where there are no women. It's really hard work, acceptance from your elders/betters is something you have to earn through hardship and probably many pranks and I think it's probably just an environment where a lot of what you'd consider "normal" moral values degrade .. Possibly, they are replaced with other values though and perhaps some kind of honour system When guys get together like that, there's no room for weakness. If you're aching or hurting or at the butt of a joke, you are supposed to suck it up and not whine about it and if you're a newcomer, you are constantly tested to see if you're up to these standards.

The internal "friend" environment with my mates down south shares a lot of similarities with this, just not at all to the same extent.

I think I definately prefer being 'one of the lads' - beating on eachother, getting the 'your Mum' jokes going etc. I've worked in both male and female orientated workplaces and I'd take a male one everytime. Not just on account of being able to flash cleavage and get stuff done for me but because you know where you stand. Yes, I might have to prove myself more than a male newcomer into the group/workplace (let's face it, doing manual jobs, yeah, the blokes will do it faster than me based on strength alone). Sometimes the guys at work might go too far with the jokes and comments, but I've never been hurt by a group of blokes like I have by a group of women. I find in working in offices/shops, if you don't fit into the clicky little groups they have, then you may as well go look for another job cos otherwise you're just gonna spend your worklife having cruel jibes pointed at you until they get the satisfaction of knowing that they've upset you.

Machoism over bitchiness everytime for me

Well .. I would probably agree with you In my life, I have felt that most guy clicks have been welcoming. At least eventually if not immediately!

I find that men are getting increasingly bitchy, petty and jealous.

I miss comradery, if such a thing ever existed.
