This is a myth. It actually isn't bad for you at all. People just started that rumor because, as you have pointed out, people find it annoying. Also, it does sound kind of devastating to the joints, but it's not. All it is is relieving built up pressure.

I cannot stress enough how much I hate loud chewing...
The loud crackling noises mixed with the visceral, moist noises .That incessant "mnhec, mnhec, mnhec, crunch, mnhec, mnhec" is enough to make me want to throw myself out of a window. |
