Possibly the best song of all time. (Starcraft 2 Beta)

This thread is now about Starcraft.

Does anyone follow the Korean proscene/play starcraft?

ForcedOvermind 02-24-2010 10:44 PM

I was awfully close to actually paying $350 on an eBay auction for a key..

Luckily some blog my friend linked me to on Facebook was giving out some invites. I thought it'd just be another scam, but I got an invite mailed to me in a couple of hours. Go figure...

Anyway here's the blog with the invites:

starcraft2betainvites[.]blogspot[.]com

Just take away the brackets and paste it in your browser!

Good luck! Hope you guys get yours too!

no / yes (if 10 years ago counts).

to be perfectly honest i don't think SC2 is going to be a bad game, not in the least, but it will never live up to the hype nor will it replicate the sensation of playing the first one for the first time.

the original starcraft made waves for being the first RTS to incorporate 3 races, it brought innovation to the genre. at this point the laundry list of features for SC2 don't really point to anything really 'new'. it might be new to the series but after 13 years i would expect it, but it's not new to the genre.

i AM curious to see how they handle the campaign mode, early reports hinted at an actual novel way of handling the 'meta' game for lack of better terms. at this point it's the only possible 'new' feature being brought to the table that i'm seeing.

Comus 02-25-2010 09:45 AM

As for living up to the hype, teamliquid.net have already approved the beta as awesome. And they're the ones blizzard was hoping to impress.

fair enough i guess, it's nice that Blizzard is paying attention to what a small and vocal minority of the gaming public has to say, the rest of us have played other games in the 12 years since Starcraft came out. my thing is a desire for something new, not just something that looks new.

the RTS genre has come a long way since the last time Blizzard released the last expansion for Warcraft 3 (back in 2003).

it's nice that Blizzard is paying attention to what a small and vocal minority of the gaming public has to say, the rest of us have played other games in the 13 years since Starcraft came out.

although it was freaking awesome to dust it off a few weeks ago to start playing through the campaign again hehe. basically, there was a much smaller hill to climb and become king of when Starcraft came out; in order - Dune 2, Warcraft, Command and Conquer, Warcraft 2, and Total Annihilation, those weren't tops, that was the entirety of the genre at the time.

i don't doubt they'll be on top again when SC2 releases, but they'll be a much smaller king on a much bigger hill.

in retrospect i goofed earlier as well. Starcraft wasn't the first title to have 3 races, the original RTS - Dune 2 had three races. although they were all 'human' and relatively similar, but still.

Comus 02-25-2010 07:22 PM

The thing about Starcraft is that it had three unique races that were balanced. At the end of the day teamliquid are the people that still play starcraft and follow the foreign and the proscene. You need to make sure the core community are pleased, because they're the ones that know what is needed for a competitive game.

The first thing blizzard wants to do is please the Koreans, after all there's still a televised proscene there. It's not a graphics boost either, it's very different. I'm not going to defend the game until I've played it, just the community seems happy so far.

Also, there's no doubting that Starcraft is still the benchmark for comparing new RTS games.

TheBig3 02-25-2010 08:03 PM

I still maintain that the more races the better, so for me WC3:FT was a monster. Still, SC was amazing though I always thought the Protess Aircrafts were overpowered.

mr dave 02-26-2010 12:32 AM

@Comus - i've never really considered the game as a competitive product, i see the point though.

as for the changes the main ones i've read that sound most appealing are the way upgrades and new vehicles are unlocked and the chronological linearity of the campaign. not really interested in the multiplayer yet. still loving 'the last stand' in dawn of war2. :bringit:

i usually played terran so i'd just EMP and send in the wraiths and laugh. hehehe

Comus 02-26-2010 05:08 PM

Carriers are strong, but only effective against terran, and even then if you let a protoss get to late game on 3-4 bases without stopping them then you deserve to lose.

TheBig3 02-26-2010 07:01 PM

See if I was terran I would only shutdown Protoss advances with a consistent nuke-strike.

In many ways I gave the Neo-Cons their political platform.

Comus 02-26-2010 07:29 PM

nukes are incredibly useless in SC1

In a PVT terran have a pretty ridiculous advantage early game. Spider mines and siege tanks basically disable the protoss ground army until they can get drop ships to do bulldogs (dropping zealots onto sieged tanks) or mine drags (dropping zealots onto sieged tanks next to mines to destroy everything) and high templars for the storms. They can also harrass very effectively with vultures after planting their mines. Protoss have DT's which are hard to counter if you don't know what you're doing.

Either way, given the balance, the better player is pretty much always going to win, regardless of race.

You'll have to forgive me, its been years since I've played that game or RTS's with any real commitment. In general I like the social aspect of gaming, and RTS is decided anti-social. I'm currently WoWing out and there's at least a guild chat.

CanwllCorfe 02-26-2010 10:53 PM

Starcraft kinda sounds like World of Warcraft cause they both end in craft. Well.. I don't know much about the game so I didn't get it but it was pretty entertaining anyway!

I got my SC on back in the day. I was a nasty tosser. After Blizzard moved on, I did as well, and have been sitting on WC3 TFT for a looooong time. I'll put money on it that I would wreck anyone on this forum TBH. I have a bad attitude about SC2...they waited too long. I don't feel the need to even get down on the game once after having been told the release date was every 'December of next year' I honestly think I'll stick with the Frozen Throne until my death.

I don't know man. I love me some WC3:TFT but Starcraft was just strait badassery.

I don't think they're going to bring WC back to the RTS platform but Star Craft is a monster. I'd consider TFT the drawing board for SC2. They were moving to an MMORPG anyhow and figured "**** it, lets try 4 races, heros, completly diffrerent resource gathering, and tons and tons of micromanagement"

I don't think everything will make it to SC2, but I bet the good stuff will.

On an unrealted note: RTS games lose their appeal with me because once a new game has been released, the pool becomes smaller and its only the hardcore rabid freaks that play. I don't play team games anymore because I'm tired of getting screamed at by my idiot partners.

Whats your account name thrice, I'll play ya.

Comus 03-01-2010 02:59 PM

SC still has the good three races, the thing with WC3 was most of the races were very similar, when compared to SC where they were completely different. The most variation in WC3 was the heroes, which thankfully will not be making a return to Blizzard RTS soon. Check out some youtube videos from the beta, (try huskystarcraft or HD starcraft youtube channels for the best ones). Micro was the ****tiest thing about WC3, the fact that you could completley ignore Macro in favour of micro is pretty stupid. Especially since SC forced you to do both.

SC2 seems to be favouring macro a lot more, but people playing are still pretty positive when it comes to the micro part of the game. Of course it took SC players years to learn all the different micro tricks.

this is why I end up hating the games. Everything becomes a pre-planed execution that only changes when someone makes a mistake.

To me, free-for-alls were the best way to play because you couldn't dominate completly another player, and upsets would come left and right.

You still play comus? I should play some of you guys.

i re-installed it not too long ago. not quite sure how we'd plan it though, i work odd hours but i'd give you a go.

personally i always preferred playing co-op against a bunch of AIs.

Comus 03-02-2010 03:21 AM

I just really watch nowadays, I found my execution and timing is pretty far off what it really should be. I'm very out of practise, but maybe we should organise something when I get my uni work sorted.

Guybrush 03-02-2010 05:14 AM

Hmmmmmm ... Sounds fun! I might like to get my ass whooped as well. :)

Terrans for the win, yarrgh!!

I got a few, one for 2v2, one for customs, and one for beasting it alone. Im usually on PiggerNussy or c0h33d, I'm on vaca and even when Im home its tough to play nowadays. Whats yours? We would probably be better off coordinating something.

Comus 03-02-2010 05:55 PM

are you playing on ICCUP or the old ****ty bnet?

TheBig3 03-05-2010 09:40 PM

guess who's stupid ass came home to a beta key.

mr dave 03-06-2010 12:45 AM

so how is it?

TheBig3 03-06-2010 04:48 AM

I don't know, I got in hella late last night and I'm off to take my teachers exam now.

Sad state of affairs, my computers so old and has so much **** on it that I need to free up .4 GB's of space just so I can install it....

I really need a new computer.

I haven't seen any so far.

I will say though, its a beautiful mix of the old version and needed updates. The 3d'ness of it is really nice, and they took a lot of the game mecahnics I liked in WC:3 and added them here. For example, if I send a group of units somewhere I can click on the portrait and the camera will follow them.

There were some changes too, Medics and drops ships are now one combined thing which is really nice, and the Terran also got shock troops.

The zerg for the most part have remained the same, but the sunken colonies and the spore colonies can now get up and relocate.

So start a thread.

Comus 04-21-2010 07:20 PM

Played a game of starcraft:BW today on Iccup. Went two-gate zealot into goons with range but accidentally got +1 air attack, so I switched to 3 base carrier and won. (it was a PVP) my first three zealots did waaay to much damage to his econ.

Comus 05-04-2010 03:57 PM

So, anyone want to play some Brood War?

I went saturday and they were going to give me one until I said "save it man, I have one already."

mr dave 05-04-2010 05:26 PM

Canada, and not 'that' far from you actually. at least that's the line EB (gamestop) fed my friend when he pre-ordered his collector's copy a while back. i passed on pre-ordering until a date was released (i'll drop money this weekend).
