Grumbling from paradise...
Sorry, dj: this is a two-year bump, but I wanted to share some pics of where I live.
The Yucatan Peninsular is a popular holiday destination for people escaping the North American winter, and it´s hot and humid for most of the year. As well as beach resorts, it has Maya ruins which look very exotic - great non-Euopean ruins looming out of the jungle like an Indiana Jones set:- But take a look behind the ruins; except at sea, have you ever seen a horizon that was quite so horizontal ? The land is flat for miles around and covered by almost impenetratable jungle, so there´s no incentive to wander off the beaten track. As a friend of mine said after her 4-hour drive from the airport, down a highway that´s cut like a tunnel through the jungle, "Oh, isn´t it boring!" On the plus side, the vegetation also intrudes into the towns, with trees giving an agreeable appearance, and crucially, a bit of shade during the heat of the day.( My house btw, is 10 mins walk to the left of the skyscraper in this pic):-

That is a flat horizon, those ruins are awesome. You would never get that horizon here haha. Can you tell me more about this place? Like where the hell it actually is haha .

Thanks for the question: here it is - the white bit on the map. From north to south, from Cancún to Guatamala, is about the same as from London to John O´Groats.
Most of it is flat jungle, but the Caribbean Sea is a fabulous clear turquoise, with coral reefs clearly visible below the surface. For the price of a plane ticket, this could be you FETCHER! :-

I know this all too well.
This picture ladies and germs is why I hate all US beaches. You don't get sexy ass water like that. I'm actually heading down that way to the Caribbeans in October so I shall meet it again even if the water is super cold.

You think the water temps will still be 70 degrees in the middle of October?

I didn´t know some of you guys were visiting Cancun and the Caribbean! But you´re right, "super cold" is not something that happens down here. For us, a bad winter is when you have to wear a long-sleeved shirt for two weeks.
I´m glad you enjoyed yourself in Cancun, FETCHER. I wonder if you were staying in the Hotel Zone:- It has quite a reputation for wild holidaymaking, what with young "springbreakers" coming down from the USA and taking advantage of the fact that they can drink legally from age 18. Has anyone tried out the discos? Apparently some of them have a "foam night" when everyone turns up in swimwear and there are all these slippery young bodies dancing around in foam together - so that´s something you´ll want to avoid, dj !
