I was cheating and my 14-day travel-abroad usage ran out.

From what I know, Spotify isn't available in North America yet so they probably would know what you're trying to do. I know that if you go on their website to try and get a premium membership the proper way, it'll just say "not available in your country yet" or something. People with memberships can listen to Spotify anywhere in the world (apparently), so maybe you need a credit card that's based in a country where the service is available? I don't even know if you can do that.

The alternative is to have a UK friend log me into Spotify every 14 days, but that's a huge pain for everyone.

It's like a fairy tale come to life!

Yeah it's a bit of an eye-opener. There just don't really exist places in Ireland at least, and certainly in those parts of the UK that I've seen, that are allowed fall into such a state of disrepair. There are worse off areas, and places where the buildings can be a bit run down, but nowhere where you'd get entire streets of abandoned houses.

Here too. It's ridiculous and embarrassing on the world stage. Mostly in the more low-income neighbourhoods which have more government subsidized housing complexes, which are not properly maintained.

But there are some abandoned buildings and areas that are fun to explore and photograph, like the old Don Valley Brick Works quarry, which is not far from where I grew up. They turned it into a park and wetlands sort of thing after the factory was shut down. It has always been one of my favourite places to go.

Yeah, Camden's pretty bad. I used to take the bus through there every day, which was kind of depressing. I believe it has the highest crime rate in the US. I'm sure that doesn't come as a surprise given what those pictures look like. It's yet another sad example of what happens when all the industry leaves an industrial city.

MoonlitSunshine 05-06-2011 11:15 AM

Yeah... I guess we haven't had that here cause Ireland's never had any real industry of note :P I lived in the town with the highest stab rate in Ireland (or at least, it was one year) up until recently (It used to be Limerick, but then they moved onto guns), and neither there, nor even in the msot rundown areas of Dublin were there abandoned houses. People never realy had a reason to up and leave en masse.

In Louisiana, some folks can't even afford shirts for their backs and engines for their cars:

And belts.
