This one really breaks my heart, too:
I seriously welled up in tears looking at these photos, I have a tender spot for animals. Why don't they concentrate on plugging the fucking leak instead of trying to save all of their oil? I was reading somewhere about oil rigs made by Norwegian companies that have such high standards that they rely on a remote control to manually override the system if there is an error with opening/ closing the valve to ensure reliability. Why can't companies like BP up their standards as well? It makes me so angry seeing all of these pictures. It's horrible. |

Every time I see a picture like this it takes my breath away. Just think how big the Earth is, then how big the Sun is. There are billions of stars like the Sun in our galaxy. Each one of those things in the picture is a galaxy. That's only an absolutely tiny portion of just the universe we've seen. The sheer size of that thought is overwhelming.

Captain Caveman - I was looking at that picture of the giant hole today actually! It's amazing... it's so weird that it's so perfectly spherical...
Dom - I love that picture, too. I especially love that picture was taken by pointing the camera to an area of the universe where they thought there was nothing interesting, and then put it on a massively long exposure... and look what they saw. |

But yes the sinkhole is another picture that amazed me. And about the space picture, I find it even more incredible to think that, on that picture, the entire Earth which we tend to think of as huge compared to most things would be less than a pixel.
