I just looked him up. Apparently he was beaten and killed because Emmet jokingly whistled at one of the killer's wife.
In the trial that followed they both acquitted by an all-male, all-white jury. After the trial they were paid $4,000 to tell the story. They both agreed and showed no remorse. One even claimed that he didn't make as much money off of his death as he deserved, and that it ruined his life. I'm surprised they weren't dragged out into the street and shot before cancer got them.

Of course the accuracy of the story will always be disputed since the only witnesses were those responsible for the crime.
I did read though that even as Roy Bryant was dying of cancer he never regretted what he had done. |

It's been called the "catalyst of the civil rights movement" though, so I guess some good did come out of it. |
