That was awful seeing it on the news. I actually had my power go out and had to watch it in the car.

Awful, just awful. And it shames me that there are still people who, although not to the same extent, continue to believe in such hatred.

I just looked him up. Apparently he was beaten and killed because Emmet jokingly whistled at one of the killer's wife.
In the trial that followed they both acquitted by an all-male, all-white jury.
After the trial they were paid $4,000 to tell the story. They both agreed and showed no remorse. One even claimed that he didn't make as much money off of his death as he deserved, and that it ruined his life.

I'm surprised they weren't dragged out into the street and shot before cancer got them.

We studied this story in school. As a dare the kid whistled at the wife, and she claimed he molested her so her husband and his half-brother tortured and killed him.

After they told the story to the magazine though their wives divorced them and they were pretty much depressed for the rest of their lives.

From what I've read he whistled at her, the Wife said the boy "asked her out on a date" and was furious and told her husband who wanted to "teach him a lesson" but saw he wasn't afraid when they merely beat him so they sought to "make an example out of him".

Of course the accuracy of the story will always be disputed since the only witnesses were those responsible for the crime.

I did read though that even as Roy Bryant was dying of cancer he never regretted what he had done.

That's pretty much what happened. The boy pretended to flirt with her, and said some pretty rude things, but this is all from her account so we can't really know if it's to be trusted.

The thing is Emmet Till was from Chicago which was a billion times less racist than Mississippi so he didn't know how to behave so that he wouldn't get in trouble. Bryant and Milam were just fucks.

It's been called the "catalyst of the civil rights movement" though, so I guess some good did come out of it.
