Haha, strange thing that you're my mom then.

Being 21 doesn't mean much overhere.
You can drive a moped and drink alcohol at 16 and.
You can drive a car and smoke weed at 18.
I believe you can ride a motorbike at 21 here. That's all :).
Ah yeah, you parent's aren't officially responsible for you after you've become 21, that's another thing.

Weed is illegal here.
At 16 you can have your driver's permit and after 6 months, you can try for your license.
At 18, you are considered an adult and can order stuff from TV, can buy porn, buy lottery tickets, go to SOME clubs, and... what else?
At 21, you can drink and go to all clubs.
At 26 I think you can rent a car.
Yeah.

MoonlitSunshine 12-03-2010 11:13 AM

at 18 you can do pretty much everything here. That's legal, of course :P

More reasons to move to the Netherlands. Just wondering, how expensive is it to get an apartment there? An are there a lot of jobs available?

There's a shortage of jobs here, unless you don't mind doing anything.
Apartment, depends on where you live.
I'm not completely into the renting prices.
IF you want to live in a big city in Amsterdam, I think you can get a decent two bedroom apartment for about 5-600 dollars a month.
If you don't mind living in a small city or a town, you can get an apartment for half that money.

Where I live, in a small town, a huge villa on 3000 square meters of land costs about 4-500.000 dollars. In Amsterdam such a thing would cost 1,7 to 2,5 million dollars.

You can buy a house in a row of houses (google translate calls it a 'townhouse', is that right?) for under 80.000 dollars.
Such a house in Amsterdam would cost over 175000 dollars.

If you look carefully you can buy a detached house in my area for about 125000 dollars.

Hope I did the calculations right from euro's to dollars :).

I must say that living here isn't bad, I just get the feeling that, being on this forum, the dutch are pretty harsh. Especially on the internet. There's friendly and unfriendly people everywhere though :)

Oh, yeah. Maximum speed of a car on a freeway is 75 miles an hour.
In towns it's 30 miles an hour.
On nearly every other road it's 50 miles an hour.

The maximum speed on a freeway will be upped to 80 miles an hour next year.
Which I think is ridiculous. With the traffic in this country, 60 miles an hour tops during day time would be good. At night time 100 miles an hour would be fine.

Before you move here: Don't bring an american car here. Petrol is almost 9 dollars per gallon (almost 2 dollars per litre, I don't know how you guys measure that ;))

Insane Guest 12-03-2010 06:41 PM

9 dollars!!! What!?!? That's insane! I'll probably go to the Netherlands for like a year, it's definitely on my bucket list.

Thanks for the info btw.

s_k 12-03-2010 07:00 PM

We're used to it now.
My car, which is a medium sized station wagon, runs 1 liter of petrol every 15 kilometres, I can get up to 17 kilometres in the summer. You do the maths to gallons and miles ;D

As far as I know, american cars do half that.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it is illegal for medicinal purposes as well.

Ha! In Michigan (my home state), you can get your permit at 14 years and 9 months and have a license on your 16th birthday!

Violent & Funky 12-11-2010 11:48 PM

Really? I assumed it was all of america, but I suppose I'm wrong. Doesn't sound safe to me though, so I don't know.

In Kentucky, you can try for your license when you're 16 and get your partial license after 6 months. When you have the partial license, you can't drive after 9PM, can't have more than a certain amount of people under the age of 18 in your car, and all sorts of things like that. I *think* you have to wait an entire year before you have a full license. Also, you have to take a driver's ed course within six months of getting your license, or it gets suspended.

Kentucky's kind of strict about licensing.

EDIT: Also, HAPPY BIRTHDAY PALOMA!! :)

That's not too bad, although it surprises me for what I believed to be a conservative state. In Michigan, you can have as many people as you want in the car, you just can't be out past midnight. Pretty good deal, of course it is a state built off of the automobile.

Oh yeah, and Kentucky is my birth state! :D

s_k 12-12-2010 06:58 PM

Happy Birthday, Paloma :)

The Bullet 12-12-2010 08:40 PM

I'm going to be 14 in exactly a month!(minus 1 day)

My birthday's on January 11th.

s_k 12-12-2010 08:47 PM

Haha, when you're 16 you're going to start wondering why, when you became 14, you were actually counting down the days.
But for now, happy birthday in exactly a month minus one day! :D

Haha, I never counted down the days. I just realized that today. I never really focus on it until someone's says, "what do you want for your birthday?" it's hard enough coming up with a Christmas list, I usually only have 2-3 things on my list, and have to really think to put 1 more on my list so my mom's not completely confused on what to get in addition to what I listed.

P.S.: My fourteenth birthday marks the beginning of the year I start racing the Miata that we got two days ago and fixed up for the transfer from street car to race car yesterday. I can't wait to start racing it!

s_k 12-12-2010 08:56 PM

My list is usually endless :D.
