You have a process?

I couldn't say I have one to be honest. I think of an idea, get some basics down and just more or less go from there. I almost never plan anything out, hence why my novels have yet to be published and probably never will. Probably a good idea to finish them, of course.

Ever painted yourself into a corner with your writing? Like, "OH **** no! I said that character was dead/somewhere else/adjusted a different way and now I can't resolve this scenario?" Often entails a complete or partial rewrite for me.

I write cool sounding things and hope and if I'm lucky a story will develop from it

For me it depends on what I'm writing. When I'm doing it for work I can just buckle down and get it done whenever and wherever, but with fiction it's a little different. I like to be in a dark room, by myself, very drunk, while listening to slow, melancholic modern classical such as Morton Feldman's Piano and String Quartet, John Cage's A String Quartet In Four Parts, and David Sylvian's There's a Light That Enters Houses With No Other House in Sight (the lyrics aren't as distracting as you'd think).
When I need/want to write something, I set a timer for an hour and force myself to sit and do nothing else for that time period. The first 15 minutes are hell—for some reason I hate writing when I'm not warmed up—and if I don't have the time blocked off, I tend to give up. Usually that hour will generate ~500 words by hand. I type the second draft.

By hand? What is this, the olden days?

My handwriting sucks so maybe I'm a little biased.

I write better by hand. It slows me down and forces me to organize my thoughts. Plus it means I can't skip the rewrite (a Hemingway tip).

Writing by hand feels more organic and flows better. I always end up stop/starting on a computer, but I can just go with a pen and paper. I approve. Bitch to type up something you've already handwritten though, since it just feels tedious cause you already done did this ****.

I feel like I craft my sentences better when I type, but I guess it takes a lot longer.

That's the point, though. Writing is invariably better after a second draft. I never just type, I always edit/proofread, sometimes completely rewrite.

It's more convenient, but the convenience of being able to delete and **** interrupts me when I'm just trying to jot **** down, and I'd rather just vomit all over a page and then clean it up later.

I think you just said exactly the same thing I was trying to.
