Irrational hatred or other reason?

Because it's a meaningless word, generally used to describe ridiculously vague pseudo-religious concepts by people who don't even have the balls to admit that they are basically religious.

This. It's self-indulgent, wishy washy nonsense for the weak-minded.

at the point seems to be moreso exploring the idea of a deeper conciousness as well as methods of meditation and self realization, which i would say is definitely spiritually without religion.

I hear it mostly from yuppie twats who don't want to be associated with religion or atheism so they firmly place themselves on both sides at once.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 02-18-2017 09:20 AM

that too.

Yeah I don't really hear many atheists call themselves spiritual. Most self-proclaimed atheists wouldn't want to be associated with religion in any form.

Chiomara 02-18-2017 10:19 AM

"Spiritual" often seems to be code for "cherry-picked, watered-down versions of various beliefs from other cultures which are poorly applied and poorly understood and tied together in new-age books marketed toward lonely people".

Although, granted, there isn't really a proper, fitting term for those who are agnostic or undecided but also strongly believe in some otherworldly force (and yes I realize someone is going to volunteer the word "delusional", but aside from that..!) and may or may not have their own cobbled-together belief system that isn't rigid enough to be a religion because it's fluid and changes often.

I used to use that word to describe the feeling i get looking up at the night sky knowing im made of the same things that are out there or to describe the sharing of atoms between things from the past. Now i just call it amazing.

sam harris is a piece of dog **** who needs to shut up

The Batlord 02-18-2017 10:55 AM

Sam Harris can be kind of a twat (from what I can remember cause I haven't paid attention to him for years), but many of his views on and arguments against religion are rock solid. I just wouldn't make him my spirit animal.
