I don't actually have ubuntu installed yet, so can't confirm if it would work on ubuntu. It came to mind after planktons post which suggested it may be a windows-specific issue.

I don't blame you. I wouldn't use Windows 8 either, which is why I haven't. I was more under the impression that you wanted to get it working. Assuming all the computer's drivers are available for that OS, go for it. See if it fixes. If it does, driver issue.
