Thanks Freebase, very comprehensive :)

So, my computer f*cked up out of nowhere. I'm running Windows 10. Walked into the room to find a blue screen had popped up, saying that it was collecting data to restart because the OS crashed or quit working. When it re-booted, the HDD wouldn't boot at all. Ran all of the diagnostics that I could and it sounds like the OS was trying to update itself and errored out somehow, then committed suicide. Luckily, I have some live Linux distros so that I can at least get online. Here is what was diagnosed:

Quote:

SMART Check: Passed

Short DST: Passed

Long DST: Failed

Failure ID: U0C05T-00098V-WPQF0K-61BG03 [Note: Zeros may be O's?]

Product ID: D2S42US#ABA

Error Code: 0x000000f

ErrorCode: 0xc00000e9

A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed.

The operating system couldn't be loaded because the system registry file is missing or contains errors.

File:\Windows\system32\config\system
I am dreading having to wipe and re-install. But that may be a best case scenario. May need a new HDD. Any ideas?

>that feel when my wife's macbook of 10 years finally died out, and I bought a refurbished replacement on ebay on a whim without scrutinizing the specs too closely because it was so cheap at ~$500, and now come to find out we purchased Core 2 Duo... :/ ......I mean, it has 8GB of new RAM and a new 1 TB SSD hybrid drive in a CLEAN 15" model with DVD drive. I think it will probably be plenty fast for the wife though, since she mostly just browses social media and e-mail.

i just upgraded from a AMD6 processor with only 3gb of ram to a Intel i5 with SSD and 8 gbs or ram.

its still cool to me how fast these SSD's go from "off" to "ready to go on internet" all in seconds rather than minutes :tramp:

I recently got a new PC to run Maya, 3DS Max, and a few other video editing apps. It's kinda zippy.

Specs:
CPU - AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2950X
GPU - Zotac RTX 2080 ti AMP 11Gb
RAM - 32Gb DDR3
MOBO - ASRock X399 Phantom Gaming 6
Storage - 6Tb Toshiba HD/1Tb Patriot Burst SSD

...output to dual HP Pavillion 32q's. I grabbed it as a pre-configured from NewEgg, but I kinda wish I'd have parted/built it myself since I'll more than likely end up getting a better MOBO and faster RAM. There's a bit of a bottleneck between those right now.

debaserr 04-25-2019 01:18 PM

I didn't even know DDR3 worked with current gen AMD chips. But yea, that thing is a beast!

It should be a punishable crime that they slapped some low end DDR3 on top of all that, but it's def a beast. It's part of a render farm I have going with 3 quad core systems.

So why does saving stuff on an external hard drive take up space on my actual hard drive and can I stop that ****? Is it just indexing?

Did you try turning it off then back on again?

It's probably a program saving appdata to your install drive.

Frownland 05-15-2019 03:15 PM

Delete yo %temp% folder.

Stephen 06-27-2019 01:49 PM

Anyone know much about vbscript? I'm running a shell script from a vbs file to redirect output to a log file

ie.
Set v_obj_shell = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell")
v_result = v_obj_shell.Run("command thingy > "some file.txt"", 0, True)

When I save the command I'm running to a text file and copy and paste it to the command line it works as expected and outputs the log file I'm after but when I run it from within the vbs I don't get a log file. Any thoughts on why this might be the case?

debaserr 06-27-2019 01:56 PM

You would probably have more luck over at https://stackexchange.com/

Stephen 06-27-2019 02:23 PM

I don't know they get all snarky over there, not like here where everyone's balanced and friendly lol.

The Batlord 06-27-2019 02:34 PM

We're friendly, just not balanced.

If you right click on the file you saved and click the Previous Versions tab, if it doesn't say that there are no previous versions available, and you see a bunch of file versions, it could be that you have shadow copies enabled and they're saving on your main disk. Normally you'd have to tell shadow copies where to save that kind of thing but I don't know you nor the fingers that been all up in your computer.

Anyone have any experience optimising Mojave so it doesn’t feel like wading through quicksand? Was forced to update when Steam dropped support for my older OSX and my computer has been running like crap ever since. Seems to be a five second delay before it does anything.

I think Mojave works best when you side with the NCR.

debaserr 12-06-2019 05:39 PM

Going from 2500K > 9600K soon.

Also 1600 DDR3 to 3200+ DDR4.

Hopefully this can last me 8 years like the last one.

Hmmmmmm ok :)

I had this issue years ago and I fixed it by deleting the SHELLICONCACHE file but this time it wont reset..... Notice on the right hand side it goes off the screen??

Its not supposed to be like that (Its gotton wider/bigger again and I dont know how to correct it)

Last time this happend like I say I just deleted the file "SHELLICONCACHE" and it fixed itself but I have deleted it 3 times since it started again a few weeks ago and nothing....... Its very strange......

Anyone know here??? (I might ask again on CTH if no one knows here -- Ah man!!)

Thanx dues :)

It also affects the INTERNET OPTIONS menu (Notice how it goes further to the right than it should (Blank space))

What controls the size of these???

The Batlord 12-14-2019 03:39 AM

Is this actually causing you any problems cause it looks benign.

Dude111 12-14-2019 01:47 PM

Ya no im just curious why it started this again,I thought all these menus are fixed width and stuff........ Just strange Batlord :)

How are you today my friend??

The Batlord 12-14-2019 01:54 PM

Been coughing up green ****.

Dude111 12-15-2019 06:55 PM

Im sorry to hear that buddy,I hope ya feel better soon :)

The Batlord 12-15-2019 06:59 PM

I do feel better tbh. Still kinda sick but had a slacker day at work and picked up two extra hours to make up for the 10+ that I missed being diseased.

I'm glad you went to work to cook food while sick. Very thoughtful of you.

I think my favorite part was when a girl who'd just showed up to work realized I was still sick and was talking about it loudly with a customer right behind her who never said a word and presumably ate the food I made him without complaint.
